"The situation was extremely dangerous. Then Senior Gojo Sawa suddenly appeared in the air and took that Cursed Spirit down with a single blow!"
"Thank goodness Senior Gojo Sawa was there. Otherwise, Nanami and I would've been in serious trouble!"
Yu Haibara animatedly described the scene to Suguru Geto.
"Hey, hey, hey! Senior Geto, can you do something like that too?"
Geto rubbed his nose. "More or less."
"As expected of you, Senior Geto! Oh, right, here's the local specialty you asked me to get!"
"Haibara, we need to go submit the mission report."
Kento Nanami said to Haibara. When he saw Geto was there too, he went over to greet him. "Senior Geto!"
Geto smiled and waved in reply, then watched the two of them leave, lost in thought.
"They almost died... This time, they had Lady Luck on their side. What about next time? And the time after that?"
"The marathon called Cursed Techniques ends with a mountain of our comrades' corpses. Cursed Spirits can never be eradicated, no matter how many we destroy. Human greed and fear have no end."
Just as he was lost in thought, someone suddenly tapped him on the shoulder.
Geto jolted out of his reverie. When he looked up and saw Gojo Sawa, he let out a sigh of relief.
"Hey, Sawa, don't suddenly appear behind people! You'll scare them to death!"
Gojo Sawa smiled. "You're the one who let your guard down, aren't you? What's got you so distracted?"
Geto paused, then asked tentatively, "Sawa, do you think what we're doing is really right?"
"Human greed and fear are endless in this world, and Cursed Spirits will never disappear. In the end, the path of a Jujutsu Sorcerer can't change anything except leaving behind the corpses of our comrades!"
"Well..."
Gojo Sawa plopped down beside Geto. "By that logic, the sun will explode in five billion years, and everything will cease to exist. Dust to dust, ashes to ashes."
"If everything's going to be destroyed eventually and nothing can be changed, then we might as well all give up!"
Geto's mouth twitched. "That's not exactly what I meant... Hey, seriously, Sawa, why did you become a Jujutsu Sorcerer?"
Gojo Sawa felt a cold sweat break out.
I transmigrated into the Gojo Clan and even got the Six Eyes. There was no way I could avoid becoming a Jujutsu Sorcerer!
But after all these years, Gojo Sawa had fully accepted life here.
"If I had to say, it'd be the convenience stores on the street, the movie theaters in Ginza, the anime conventions in Akihabara, AKB48..."
"Hey, hey, hey. Are those just a bunch of trivial little things?"
Geto looked baffled.
"Geto, you're always saying Jujutsu Sorcerers should protect non-sorcerers, even if it costs them their lives, as if it's some self-evident duty."
"But I fight Cursed Spirits only for myself. I like this world. I like living here, so I won't let anything destroy it."
"Do you think Yu Haibara became a Jujutsu Sorcerer because he felt responsible for protecting the weak? No. Protecting the weak is something he loves doing. So, fundamentally, he's living for himself too."
Geto wasn't the only one who had been troubled by this question.
In the original story, Kento Nanami had also deeply questioned the meaning of what he was doing.
After graduating from Jujutsu High, he quit working as a Jujutsu Sorcerer, abandoned the responsibility of "protecting the weak," and became a corporate drone.
Only after he understood what he truly wanted—though perhaps working a regular job was just shittier than being a Jujutsu Sorcerer—did he return to the ranks of the Jujutsu Sorcerers.
So whether Jujutsu Sorcerers took on that responsibility was ultimately a matter of personal choice.
Gojo Sawa turned to look at Geto. "So, if you cast off the shackles of protecting the weak, why did you become a Jujutsu Sorcerer, Geto?"
Sawa's words left Geto frozen in place.
He began to ask himself what he had become a Jujutsu Sorcerer for.
To protect the weak?
That seemed to be nothing more than the Jujutsu Sorcerer doctrine he had absorbed since childhood, not something he truly wanted to do.
For a moment, Geto felt even more lost, and, for some reason, inexplicably irritable.
Brrring—
Suddenly, Geto's phone rang.
He pulled it out. A voice from the Mission Department came through. "Mr. Geto, we have a mission for you. The location is a remote mountain village..."
Gojo Sawa's ears twitched. He leaned in and overheard the mission location.
"Okay. I'll head over right away."
Geto sighed, then turned to Gojo Sawa with a forced smile.
"I should get going."
Gojo Sawa nodded and watched Geto's figure gradually disappear into the distance. He scratched his head, troubled.
"Should I tell Satoru...?"
A remote mountain village in Hakone, on the outskirts of Tokyo.
"Monsters! You two are monsters, just like your parents!"
"We should've killed you when you were still babies!"
"My child nearly died because of you! We can't let you keep doing evil!"
Geto ignored the villagers' furious denunciations and stared expressionlessly at the two little girls shivering inside the cage.
Their clothes were tattered, their faces gaunt, and their bodies covered in bloody marks from abuse.
They were Nanako Hasaba and Mimiko Hasaba.
The village chief shouted beside Geto, "Mr. Geto, these two are the monsters!"
"They're always muttering to themselves, and ever since they showed up, strange things have been happening in our village every day. Several people have died or gone mad!"
The villagers in this remote mountain village clearly still clung to some superstitions.
In their eyes, Nanako Hasaba and Mimiko Hasaba's strange behavior was the cause of all the bizarre incidents.
But as a Jujutsu Sorcerer, Geto could see what was going on at a glance.
"Two children born in a remote mountain village with the talent for Jujutsu... It's obvious what happened here!"
Putting together the details the villagers had shared with the girls' tiny gestures and glances, Geto easily pieced together what had happened.
After awakening their Cursed Techniques, the two had started seeing Cursed Spirits that ordinary people couldn't. Kindhearted as they were, they had decided to use their newly awakened powers to help the villagers.
But their powers were too weak to exorcise the Cursed Spirits. Instead, their strange behavior aroused the villagers' suspicions and hostility.
Before him, the two sisters huddled together, clinging to each other. In his ears, the villagers' incessant curses were too vile to bear.
Protect the weak? Who were the weak, really?
Create a world without Cursed Spirits? Kill all non-sorcerers?
At that moment, Geto had none of those thoughts in his mind.
He was simply furious. He just wanted to... kill!
"Um..."
Geto suddenly turned and smiled at the village chief. "I've noticed a few things. Let's go outside and talk."
