Background / History
Tang Qi was an illegitimate child who lived with his mother in Graystone Village until he was sent to the Poet Academy. His family treated him as an outsider, and his later achievements left his relatives questioning whether the famous bard was truly the same person they had dismissed. 123 231
As a commoner with a diluted Black Dragon bloodline, Tang Qi entered the Lord's Alliance intending to join the Bard's Guild. He befriended the rogue Gawain Monte Carlo, known as Black Snake, and gradually became involved in bardic rivalries, noble politics, and a conspiracy involving a powerful family and a dangerous cult. 123
Tang Qi first distinguished himself through observation rather than force. In the Twilight Forest, he recognized that a thief had used misleading footprints to draw investigators toward town and helped Black Snake's group identify the likely direction of the real trail. 12 During the Orc Attack on Star Plum Town, he used combat instincts and quick thinking to defeat Hus, organize the town's evacuation, and lead its people toward Dragon Gold City. 56
In Dragon Gold City, Tang Qi established himself as both an adventurer and a public figure. He protected Catherine's tavern, investigated the Red Scarf Gang, explored the Dungeon, and began writing guides based on his travels. His Twilight Forest Guide and later works transformed his experiences into practical adventure literature while greatly increasing his fame. 112 124 153 170
His investigations repeatedly placed him in conflicts involving nobles, cults, the Lionheart regime, the Golden Country, and the Stone of Oblivion. He escaped Dragon Gold City with his companions despite Leon Lionheart's overwhelming power, relying on deception, timing, and Stella's intervention rather than attempting to win a direct battle. 153 193
Tang Qi later crossed the Wasteland, helped House Hal, negotiated with Lizardmen, and uncovered the history of the Tide of Chaos. He adapted to unstable magic through unconventional spell use, defeated the Lizardman Shaman Feathers, and pursued the truth behind the Red Dragon Spitfire and the Source Essence crisis. 242 249 251 254 265
After entering Ebony Forest, Tang Qi became increasingly involved in the fate of the Beastfolk. He led the Roaring Tribe toward survival, revised its doctrine, and turned his reputation into a source of unity and military authority. Shivana eventually recognized him as the tribe's true leader, even after he offered to destroy their coercive contract. 204 230 377
Tang Qi led the Beastfolk and allied adventurers to Wind Sand Islet, where he helped defend the city from the Black Dragon Anduin. His killing of the dragon made him a public legend and strengthened his Dragon Slayer bearing. He then began investigating the political conspiracy behind the war while preparing to travel toward the Southern Great Wall and Great Wall Prison. 384 393 395 396
Appearance
Tang Qi has black hair and is commonly seen carrying a lute. His usual equipment includes a curved saber and studded leather armor, later replaced or supplemented by illusionary armor and magical robes. 240 309
Distinguishing features include:
- A lute used for both music and combat.
- A curved saber, including Snake Kiss and later the Revenge Curved Saber.
- Exceptional charisma and a manner capable of putting strangers at ease.
- Numerous magical rings, earning him the nickname of a “ring collector.” 125 277
- A growing reputation that causes adventurers and Beastfolk to recognize him by name. 280 384
Personality
Tang Qi is intensely curious and treats unexplained events as opportunities to gather stories, uncover hidden truths, and improve his guides. Even when an event does not directly concern him, he often investigates until he understands its cause. 104 304
He is analytical and observant, frequently relying on deduction rather than brute force. He notices traps, reconstructs conspiracies, studies unfamiliar species, and adapts quickly when his assumptions fail. His understanding of Lizardmen psychology, for example, changes after emotional manipulation proves ineffective against their cold-blooded culture. 12 245 359
Tang Qi is also pragmatic and manipulative. He uses taunts, contracts, religious doctrine, reputation, and carefully chosen allies to control situations that he could not win through strength alone. His leadership combines genuine responsibility with deliberate influence over the beliefs and behavior of others. 230 378 384
Despite this pragmatism, he protects people he considers important. He refuses to expose Anbi to unnecessary danger, seeks cures for his companions, and prioritizes civilians and vulnerable members of the Beastfolk during travel. 193 236 359
His humor is irreverent and often used as defiance. He mocks stronger enemies, turns dangerous negotiations into performances, and left Leon a contract bearing an insulting signature after escaping Dragon Gold City. 193
Abilities & Skills
Bardic Music and Inspiration
Tang Qi's bardic abilities allow him to support allies, heal mental distress, and turn music into a combat tool.
- Poet's Inspiration strengthens allies and can empower his sword techniques. 64 393
- Resting Melody helped Little Rascal recover from mental trauma and later healed and soothed groups during dungeon battles. 145 185
- Inspiration Expert grants five uses of Poet's Inspiration, while Resting Melody can restore them. 309
- His lute can create disruptive sound, stun enemies, and interfere with Lizardmen communication. 207 249
- Silence effects can severely restrict him because many of his spells and tactics depend on sound. 250
Silver Tongue and Verbal Abuse
Tang Qi's speech is one of his most reliable weapons. He can persuade guards, negotiate with hostile groups, manipulate emotions, and provoke enemies into making mistakes.
- Silver Tongue can redirect attacks and influence combat actions. 157 163
- Verbal Abuse taunts enemies and worsens their concentration, particularly when they are already angry. 200
- Demeanor: Commoner Hero improves his ability to communicate with and influence commoners. 93 123
- Hope Lighthouse and Celebrity Effect amplify his ability to inspire and attract followers. 204 309
- Art of Making Friends is ineffective against Lizardmen because it relies on warm-blooded emotional instincts. 245
Swordsmanship and Defensive Combat
Although Tang Qi is fundamentally a spellcaster, he developed enough swordsmanship to fight experienced adventurers and survive close combat.
- Curved Saber: Proficient and later Mastery: Curved Blade improve his agility, footwork, and blade control. 123 170
- Snake Fang delivers rapid thrusts and counter-hooks, making it effective against spellcasters and distracted enemies. 64 157 246
- Guardian Sword Dance can perfectly block attacks when supported by Poet's Inspiration. 125 193 393
- Defensive Sword Dance and Whirling Sword Dance expand his defensive and offensive options. 125 309
- Alertness gives him early warning of attacks, while Mighty Step improves his mobility. 123 173
Spellcasting and Utility Magic
Tang Qi's spell list emphasizes control, movement, investigation, and unconventional applications.
- Sleep Spell, Suggestion Spell, and Silence Spell disable or control opponents. 123 250 377
- Healing Word, Protection Spell, and Resting Melody provide emergency support. 123 204 309
- Speak with Dead and the Logbook help him investigate crimes, history, and hidden conspiracies. 153 236
- Dispel Magic allows him to challenge magical effects, although it failed against Dawn's ninth-circle transfiguration. 273 309
- Misty Step, combined with Gaseous Form and his Mist Walker feat, lets him escape through smoke and mist. 251 393
- His Spell Storing Ring allowed him to cast Burning Hand without normal verbal, somatic, or material requirements. 251
Mist Walker
Mist Walker allows Tang Qi to use mist, smoke, and gaseous movement as tactical mediums.
- He can merge with smoke and use its boundary as the range of his movement. 251
- In mist form, he is protected from ordinary spell damage and effects, though effects targeting him personally may still apply. 251
- The technique allowed him to become a lethal assassin in the blue mist released by the Lizardmen. 246
Leadership and Faith
Tang Qi turns charisma, practical organization, and supernatural reputation into collective power.
- He organized Star Plum Town's migration and later led mixed groups of humans, Beastfolk, Goblins, and adventurers. 56 207
- The Ironblood Doctrine gives followers a shared ideology and can grant temporary Heroism before battle. 230 378
- He uses faith to create obedience and cohesion among the Beastfolk, while also enforcing discipline through doctrine, rewards, and forced preaching. 374 378
- His follower count reached 1,003 after the allied army arrived at Wind Sand Islet. 384
Dragon Bloodline and Dragon-Slaying
Tang Qi's diluted Black Dragon heritage became increasingly relevant after the Wasteland.
- Three Dragon Gift grants fire, strong acid, and force weapon enhancements, as well as resistance to those damage types. 273
- Dragon Slayer improves his attacks against dragons, protects him from dragon intimidation, and can frighten Giant Dragons after being strengthened. 273 396
- He combined these abilities with Nemesis, giant-strength enhancement, and Poet's Inspiration to sever Anduin's tail and kill the Black Dragon. 393
- The acid resistance granted by Three Dragon Gift appears connected to the dormant Black Dragon bloodline inherited through House Weinberg. 273
