Background / History
Gravel left Ironforge at twenty to pursue revenge. After achieving it, he continued wandering for more than a century rather than returning home; Ironforge's alliance with giants gave him another reason to stay away. He eventually settled into a repetitive life of commissions, alcohol, and temporary adventuring parties. 183 202
Black Snake once saved Gravel's life. Gravel followed him in repayment, and they later became part of the Minions of the Ebony Forest. Their Great Desert expedition ended in failure: the group fled the ruins on the third day after a member died, despite later rumors that they had escaped with a secret treasure. 19 115
He spent three years in Star Plum Town with Black Snake, working as a mercenary. During the stolen star plum investigation, he questioned the treatment of Catherine and Anbi, though he ultimately deferred to Black Snake's decisions. When the town faced an orc raid, Gravel initially favored escaping under Lord Mel's protection, then agreed to protect Catherine while Tang Qi attempted to evacuate the townspeople. 9 48 50
During the evacuation crisis, Gravel extorted money and valuables from Star Plum Town residents while posing as a violent robber. Old David later reported the assault to the town guards. 51
After reaching Dragon Gold City, Gravel delivered Black Snake's inheritance to Catherine. With his obligations to Black Snake and Catherine fulfilled, he left Tang Qi's group and later accepted lucrative work with Wendy Silver Shield's dungeon party. 113 114 131
Gravel's party became trapped and starved in the Deep Well Dungeon. He exhausted himself protecting Wendy's team from a Vine Monster, fell into a near-death state, and was ultimately rescued by Tang Qi. The experience, along with memories of Black Snake, prompted him to finally consider returning home and building a family. 182 183 184 202
Appearance
Gravel is a compact, heavily built mountain dwarf whose dense physique and muscular strength make him far heavier than his height suggests. 48 74
- One-eyed. 12
- Wears a large beard, which he treats as especially worth protecting. 164
- Commonly fights in heavy half-plate or plate armor, an iron helmet, and a tower shield nearly as tall as himself. 12
- Carries a morningstar or spiked mace designed to crush armor and undead skulls. 12 55
- Often needs to stand on tiptoe or rely on others when mechanisms are built beyond dwarf height. 76
Personality
Gravel is blunt, profane, competitive, and easily provoked by jokes about his height. Tang Qi's insults routinely push him into reckless displays of strength, though their arguments gradually become an expression of mutual trust. 65 66 202
He is intensely fond of alcohol, especially star plum wine and Underflow Black Beer. His drinking frequently affects his work, finances, and attempts to find stable employment, but he also treats sharing a drink as an important form of companionship. 114 118
Despite his roughness, Gravel is dependable in a crisis. He protects weaker allies, carries unconscious teammates out of danger, and repeatedly puts himself between enemies and his party. His practical morality can be harsh—he showed little grief over Jackal's death and participated in robbing townspeople—but he remains loyal to debts, promises, and people he considers worth protecting. 17 51 164 182
As a long-lived dwarf, Gravel initially rejects the idea that a few weeks of travel can make someone a friend; dwarven custom, in his view, takes roughly a century. By the time he parts from Tang Qi, however, he implicitly accepts their friendship. 114 202
Abilities & Skills
Darkvision and Adventuring Experience
Gravel can see in darkness and uses that advantage to scout caves, identify concealed objects, and guide companions through unlit terrain. 12
- Spotted a cart camouflaged beneath leaves near a cave entrance. 12
- Takes point in underground passages and can operate without torchlight. 13
- His Darkvision was rendered ineffective by the unnatural darkness of the Deep Well's Fourth Floor. 182
Shield Combat
Gravel's primary fighting style centers on a tower shield, using its weight and his own momentum to control space and protect allies.
- [Shield Charge] — Generates a powerful impact force capable of knocking enemies back, breaking ambushes, launching Gravel through combat spaces, and boosting an ally's leap. 14 55 79 90
- [Arrow-Absorbing Shield] — Draws or redirects incoming force; he used it to deflect magical repulsion back into an attacking orc. 66 200
- Can use his shield as a stable wall against dire wolves and other charging enemies. 67
- Combined [Shield Charge] with Dawn's leap to breach Dragon Gold City's gate. 192
Mace Combat and Physical Strength
Gravel wields a morningstar or spiked mace with enough force to break armor, crush undead skulls, and shatter magical defenses when enhanced by Tang Qi's inspiration. 55 71
- Defeated kobolds with a shield-led assault. 14 17
- Climbed a colossal Zombie Meatball and destroyed its skull with wrestling skill and brute strength. 79
- Fought through paralysis from [Electric Claw] and broke through a mage's [Shield Spell] with a mace strike empowered by [Poet's Inspiration]. 71
- Uses wrestling techniques against larger opponents, though massive creatures without reachable legs limit this approach. 79
Combat Skills
Gravel possesses a deep reserve of warrior techniques gained across his long adventuring career.
- [Earthquake] — Slams his shield into the ground to create a tremor across an area. 66
- [Grasp of Earth] — Used to press forward after being shocked and numbed by magic. 71
- [Replenish Energy] — Restores some energy during combat. 67
- [Tidal Action] — Allows him to immediately repeat a previous attack. 197
- His combat skills consume substantial energy; hunger and exhaustion can leave him unable to use them effectively. 81 182
Equipment
- Tower shield — His signature defensive weapon and focus for [Shield Charge]. 12 65
- Morningstar / spiked mace — Blunt weapon used against armor, undead, and spellcasters. 12 55
- Heavy half-plate or plate armor — Provides strong protection but adds considerable weight. 12 74
- Iron helmet with bull horns — Worn during the journey from Star Plum Town. 88
- Skinning knife — Used to process hunted beasts and collect materials. 67
Relationships
- Tang Qi Weinberg — Teammate, sparring partner, and eventual friend. Their relationship begins with teasing and rivalry, develops through repeated battles, and ends with Tang Qi using Gravel's owed favor to ask him to find happiness. 65 71 184 202
- Black Snake / Gawain Monte Carlo — Gravel's savior, former leader, and long-time companion. Gravel followed Black Snake to repay a life debt and later fulfilled his final wish by delivering an inheritance to Catherine. 19 113 183
- Catherine — A person Gravel was tasked with protecting after her father's death. He later brought her Black Snake's inheritance. 50 71 113
- Kuru — Kobold teammate. Gravel initially treats Kuru roughly but fights alongside it, relies on its magic, and carries it out of danger when it is unconscious. 65 67 164
- Wendy Silver Shield — His later employer and dungeon captain. Wendy cared for Gravel when he was starving and gravely injured in the Deep Well. 131 182
- Markwen — Former Minions of the Ebony Forest teammate. Gravel avoided returning to the Ebony Forest partly because of the unresolved split between Markwen and Black Snake after the Great Desert expedition. 202 285

Trivia
- Gravel's real name, Bran, is not revealed until Chapter 305. 305
- He considers dwarves the “sturdiest and strongest” of the short races and becomes angry when humans mistake kobolds, gnomes, halflings, and dwarves for one another. 68
- He particularly dislikes giants, largely because their size makes their legs difficult—or impossible—for him to reach in a fight. 78 79
- Tang Qi's dwarf jokes and verbal spells are one of the most reliable ways to provoke Gravel into fighting harder. 65 66 90
