Background / History

The Zhang Family began as one of the East Mountain Islands’ seven leading cultivation families. It was unusually united by the standards of the cultivation world, but its position was precarious: Old Ancestor Zhang Tianzheng’s hidden injuries left him with less than ten years to live, trade routes and overseas businesses were under demonic-path pressure, and no member of the middle generation had initially reached Nascent Soul. 1

Its decline was reversed by direct-line descendant Zhang Chen. After he revealed his bloodline-based inheritance to Zhang Tianzheng, the family made securing his marriage and descendants its highest priority. Zhang Chen’s marriage to Lin Qingxue immediately preceded his rise to Qi Refining Great Perfection and the upgrade of the family’s spirit vein. 2 3 11

The spirit-vein advancement brought Spirit Rain to Dao Seeking Peak and improved the cultivation of numerous clan members. Zhang Tianzheng publicly declared Zhang Chen the family’s chosen auspice, granted him status equal to the family head, and gave him unrestricted access to the clan treasury. 12

The Zhangs used a Full Moon Baptism Feast for Zhang Daoxuan and Zhang Daoling to draw out rivals who believed the clan was vulnerable. When the Wang Family attempted to seize Zhang resources through a life-and-death arena wager, Zhang Chen and Zhang Tianzheng turned their apparent weakness into a trap. After consolidating the islands, the family expanded its pill-refining business, armed elite teams for the East Mountain Secret Realm, and harvested enormous quantities of spirit herbs, ore, and cultivation materials from the Longevity Cave Heaven. 58 62 68 71

The sea-beast tide further elevated the Zhang Family’s influence. Its Armor Dissolving Powder and Purple Gold Armor Dissolving Powder became decisive battlefield resources, while the clan’s contributions gave it leverage in the subsequent distribution of East Mountain Islands resources. 94 95 112

As external threats from the Demonic Path increased, the Zhang Family demanded command rather than mere cooperation from the East Mountain Sect and other island powers. With Zhang Tianzheng’s Spirit Transmutation breakthrough, the family openly declared sovereignty over its Southern Domain territory. Its later expansion incorporated former righteous-path remnants, drove out Demonic Path forces, absorbed the Barbarian Tribe, and culminated in the establishment of the Southern Spirit Immortal Sect. 193 202 256
