At dawn the next day, the King's Road outside King's Landing was lined with commoners, refugees, and merchants waiting to enter the city.

The heavy city gates and portcullis groaned as they opened at Gods' Gate.
A squad of fully armed Gold Cloaks, their expressions stern, emerged from the gate and formed two lines, blocking the entrance to Gods' Gate.
"A rebellion broke out in the Red Keep last night. By order of the Queen, everyone entering or leaving King's Landing must be inspected."
A Gold Cloak holding a scroll of parchment stood at the gate and shouted.
After repeating the announcement three times, he waved a hand. The other Gold Cloaks took up positions in the middle of the gate, dividing it in two. Everyone entering or leaving had to submit to their inspection.
"Toren, take two men and drive the last wagon to the inn we passed earlier. Wait for us there."
Robb, standing in the middle of the queue, heard the Gold Cloaks' words passed back through the crowd. He turned to Toren and spoke.

There were so many people queuing to enter through Gods' Gate that Robb and his party were still quite far away.
So when Toren and the other two men drove the specially made wagon carrying Blood Wind back the way they had come, the Gold Cloaks didn't see them.
The entry inspections proceeded very slowly. It wasn't until the sun was nearly at its zenith that Robb and the others finally reached the front.
