History

King's Landing was originally the modest fief of House Potterly, whose small square castle stood on the relatively flat southern slope of Pike Island. Because most local resources were sent to nearby Pike City, the town remained comparatively poor despite its useful harbor. Pirates and daring merchants nevertheless frequented it to resupply, trade illicit goods, and spend their profits. 102 109

During Balon Greyjoy's invasion of the North, Ironborn longships blockaded the harbor and forcibly seized incoming vessels, disrupting its free trade and throwing the port into chaos. 102 108

Robb Stark's forces landed at King's Landing after clearing the blockade. Most able-bodied Ironborn had already fled to House Potterly's square fortress, leaving only elderly residents and slaves in the port. Robb took control of the town from its sole brick-and-stone inn and ordered Ramsay Bolton's Dreadfort troops to attack House Potterly. 108 109

Following the fall of the Iron Islands' resistance, Robb used King's Landing as a staging point while Northern reinforcements arrived by sea. The severed head of Shavon Potterly, Lord of King's Landing, was sent to Pike City alongside Robb's demand for submission. 110
