Background / History
Jiraiya is Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and one of Konoha’s Legendary Sannin. For years, he traveled the ninja world in pursuit of the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy and its foretold “Child of Prophecy.” He returned to Konoha after a month away when border attacks intensified, then accepted Hiruzen’s appointment as captain of a new high-difficulty mission team that included his former student, Minato Namikaze. 54
His early return to village life was marked by repeated peeping incidents. He was arrested by the Military Police after being mistaken for a threat to Kazashiro and the other children, escaped custody, and was later nearly killed by Tsunade after spying on a bathhouse. Kazashiro’s Medical Ninjutsu kept him alive until medical personnel arrived. 58 62 64
Jiraiya recognized Kazashiro’s talent in both Ice Release and Medical Ninjutsu, associating him with the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy. He offered to teach Kazashiro Sage Mode and later helped him gain Mount Myōboku’s permission to train there. 64 66 381
During the war, Jiraiya served as a steady battlefield commander alongside Minato and Fugaku. After Obito awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, Jiraiya accepted him as a disciple in the hope that Obito could eventually provide a stabilizing influence within the Uchiha clan. 103 104
Jiraiya continued to intervene in the affairs of his Rain Village disciples—Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan. He arranged for Orochimaru to transplant replacement eyes for Nagato in exchange for Hanzo’s remains, later bringing Nagato to Mount Myōboku for Sage Mode training. 105 171 383
At different points, Jiraiya was imprisoned or threatened with execution for offenses including peeping, insulting the Hokage, and smuggling adult literature. Kazashiro spared him from execution, while a later special pardon required him to investigate dangerous activity along Konoha’s borders in atonement. 273 412 414
Appearance
Jiraiya is a white-haired man, commonly associated with Mount Myōboku’s toads and recognizable wooden clogs. 57 129 416
- Long white hair, which he weaponizes in battle. 327 415
- A notably large nose, as remarked upon during his visit to Kazashiro’s tent. 129
- Often wears wooden clogs that he can use as improvised projectiles in close combat. 327 416
Personality
Jiraiya is boastful, theatrical, and prone to announcing himself in the middle of combat. His self-confidence is genuine—he is a Legendary Sannin—but it is often undermined by bad timing, interruptions, or the reactions of his summoned toads. 327 328 427
His habitual peeping and womanizing repeatedly create personal and political problems for him. He is nevertheless capable of remorse, sincerely thanking Kazashiro after learning that the boy saved his life. 58 62 64 400
Behind his unserious behavior, Jiraiya is loyal to Konoha, protective of his students, and reliable in critical situations. He worries over Obito’s dangerous reconnaissance mission, advocates for Nagato and the other Rain orphans, and is trusted to handle major military and diplomatic responsibilities. 105 129 310 381
The Great Toad Sage’s altered prophecy deeply unsettles him. Having devoted much of his life to finding the Child of Prophecy, Jiraiya struggles to accept being told that his mission is over and the future is now obscured. 252
