Background / History

Warring States Period

At age twelve, Hashirama accompanied his younger brother Tobirama as a Senju envoy to the Hyūga Clan. Hyūga Tenin recognized Hashirama’s chakra as a “Little Sun,” sensing extraordinary vitality within him despite his immature demeanor. 78

He fought Hyūga Hiyori as part of the Senju effort to secure the Hyūga alliance. Hashirama defeated her, after which the Hyūga agreed to join the Senju camp for their own strategic interests. 79

A chance meeting at a secluded river began his friendship with Uchiha Madara. Hashirama shared Madara’s weariness of war, but remained convinced that people with shared pain could understand one another and eventually end the cycle of conflict. 107

He later included Sosuke in his dream of founding a sanctuary where children would not be forced onto battlefields. 111

Break with Madara and the Senju–Uchiha War

When clan hostility exposed Hashirama and Madara’s friendship, Hashirama initially refused to fight. He unleashed Wood Release to protect Tobirama and Senju Butsuma, driving his body hard enough to cough blood and burn through his own cellular energy. 112 113

Hashirama’s Wood Release rapidly became a central Senju weapon. He defeated Uchiha Tetsuya, shattered Uchiha morale, and held the northern front through techniques such as World of Trees. 141

His conflict with Sosuke became a prolonged stalemate. Hashirama repeatedly confronted him to prevent Sosuke from attacking Senju forces, while Sosuke was forced to answer each threat to the Uchiha rear. 142 143 144

Senju Leadership and Konoha

Hashirama became the Senju Clan Head after confronting the clan elders and establishing his authority through both resolve and strength. 149

Following the Senju–Uchiha alliance, he focused on Konoha’s civilian welfare and infrastructure. He personally oversaw housing construction, revised buildings around residents’ needs, and worked at construction sites late into the night. 181

Although Sosuke became Konoha’s First Hokage, Hashirama remained committed to peace through power-sharing. He proposed distributing or selling Tailed Beasts to reduce conflict between hidden villages, but Sosuke rejected the plan. 198 201

Ninja Sect Conflict

Hashirama initially sought to avoid conflict with the Ninja Sect out of respect for Narayan, his former teacher. When its representatives proposed eliminating the Uchiha and threatened Konoha, he expelled them and made clear that the Senju would not attack fellow villagers. 195

At the Five Kage Summit, the Ninja Sect stabbed him during negotiations. His wound healed almost immediately, and the attack ended his restraint; he retaliated with Unrivaled Super Strength and Wood Release. 204

He later fought beside Sosuke and Madara against Wu, the monster embodying the world’s evil. 214 215

Resurrection and Later Battles

After Hashirama’s death, Konoha sought his return to counter threats from the Ōtsutsuki. Akemi’s initial resurrection attempt failed because Hashirama was not yet dead in the necessary sense, but he was ultimately revived through a prepared body, Impure World Reincarnation, and Izuna’s clone-sacrifice technique. 238 250

His new body incorporated Ten-Tails cellular structure and Sosuke’s cells, greatly enhancing both his vitality and Wood Release. After returning, he easily defeated Chiri and Taito in a confidence-building spar despite their powerful dojutsu. 250

Hashirama later fought Momoshiki, opposed the corrupted Sage of Six Paths, Indra, and corrupted Hyūga Hiyori, and continued to serve as one of Konoha’s foremost defenders. 251 254 267

Appearance

Hashirama first appears as a twelve-year-old boy with a bowl-cut hairstyle and an unassuming appearance that conceals immense chakra. His thin frame is repeatedly contrasted with the destructive power of his Wood Release. 78 113

  • Bowl-cut hair. 78
  • Wore a white fur collar during the Hyūga diplomatic mission. 78
  • Possesses chakra described by Hyūga Tenin as resembling a “Little Sun.” 78
  • His outwardly slight build contains exceptional physical power. 113

Personality

Hashirama is idealistic, empathetic, and deeply committed to ending war. He believes understanding can overcome hatred, and his goal of building Konoha centers on protecting families and sparing children from the battlefield. 107 111

His kindness can make him appear naive or immature, particularly beside the more politically cautious Tobirama. He is easily embarrassed, dislikes tea, and often responds cheerfully to praise for Konoha. 78 195

However, Hashirama’s gentleness has firm limits. Threats to his father, brother, friends, or village provoke immediate and overwhelming action. He exhausted his own life force to protect his family, rejected the Ninja Sect’s demand to turn on the Uchiha, and retaliated after its attack at the Five Kage Summit. 113 195 204

Abilities & Skills

Wood Release

Hashirama converts his chakra into life force, causing plant life to grow at extraordinary speed and scale. 113

  • Wood Locking Wall — Raises curved wooden pillars to shield Tobirama from Sosuke’s Chidori. 112
  • Tree Binding Prison Burial — Produces rapidly growing trees to restrain enemies. 113
  • Forest Creation / World of Trees — Creates massive forests capable of overwhelming large groups and exhausting powerful opponents. 113 141
  • Wood Dragon Technique — Forms a giant wooden dragon that can constrict opponents and drain chakra. 143 212
  • Wood Golem — Creates a giant construct suitable for direct combat and transportation. 204 212
  • Wall of Branches Technique — Builds a defensive wooden shield around allies. 204
  • Excessive use of his early Forest Creation strained his cellular lifespan, though he later gained sufficient mastery to use Wood Release far more freely. 113 131

Physical Strength and Chakra

Hashirama possesses enormous natural chakra reserves and exceptional close-combat strength.

  • Hyūga Tenin perceived his chakra as extraordinarily vast even when Hashirama was twelve. 78
  • His chakra could manifest visibly around his body and was assessed as near Kage-level peak during an early spar with Madara and Sosuke. 111
  • Unrivaled Super Strength — A straightforward punch powerful enough to send an armed Ninja Sect combatant through a wall. 195 204
  • His endurance allows him to sustain massive Wood Release constructs over extended engagements. 141 144

Sage Mode, Yang Power, and Truth-Seeking Orbs

Hashirama can enter Sage Mode and later gains Yang Power through training under Kaguya. 214 225

  • Uses Shadow Clones to accelerate training and develops all five elemental chakra natures within three years. 226
  • Condenses Truth-Seeking Orbs after mastering the required chakra natures and Yang Power. 226
  • His Yang Power and enhanced Sage Body complement his Wood Release, raising his combat power beyond his earlier peak. 224 226

Divine Technique

Hashirama’s Divine Technique turns fatal battle damage into an avenue for growth.

  • Can revive roughly one minute after fatal destruction of vital organs, including the heart and brain. 266
  • Returns from death with increased chakra and strength. 266
  • Further gains depend on the severity of the injuries and the intensity of the battle. 278
  • The ability remains dangerous to cultivate in real combat, as an enemy may prevent him from recovering. 278

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Great Sword — Used in combat against Uchiha Tetsuya. 141
  • Scrolls — Used to summon giant shuriken for ranged attacks. 156
  • Wood Release constructs — His primary battlefield weapons, defenses, restraints, and large-scale siege tools. 112 113 141

Relationships

  • Senju Tobirama — Younger brother. Hashirama frequently protects him, though Tobirama is more politically calculating and often frustrated by Hashirama’s idealism. 78 112 143
  • Senju Butsuma — Father and former Senju Clan Head. Hashirama risked his own health and life force to protect him during the clash with the Uchiha. 112 113
  • Uchiha Madara — Closest friend, rival, and fellow founder of Konoha. Their friendship began at the river but was torn apart by clan conflict; they later cooperated again against greater threats. 107 113 215 267
  • Uchiha Sosuke — Friend, ideological counterpart, and major battlefield rival. Hashirama shares Sosuke’s desire to protect Konoha but differs sharply on the means of achieving peace. 111 142 201
  • Hyūga Hiyori — Opponent in the duel that secured the Hyūga–Senju alliance. 79
  • Ōtsutsuki Kaguya — Hashirama became her bodyguard in exchange for guidance in condensing Yang Power. 225 226
  • Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki — Initially an enemy, then a powerful combat associate during the conflict with the Sage of Six Paths. 251 254
  • Uchiha Chiri and Uchiha Taito — Konoha’s younger generation whom Hashirama assists and protects as head of security. 226 250

Trivia

  • Hashirama dislikes tea, despite Tobirama’s interest in the tea ceremony. 78
  • Tobirama views Hashirama’s youthful behavior as so extreme that he often acts more like an exasperated parent than a younger brother. 78
  • His Divine Technique’s injury-driven growth leads Sosuke to compare him to a Saiyan. 278
