Background / History

The Uchiha trace their lineage to Indra, elder son of the Sage of Six Paths. Indra inherited the Sage Eyes, while his brother Asura became the Senju ancestor; the clan identifies this inheritance as the origin of the long Uchiha–Senju conflict. 153 415

Before Konoha’s founding, the Uchiha ancestral territory lay along the Naka River south of the future village. The clan freely contributed this land when it cooperated with the Senju to establish Konoha. 123

Senju Tobirama placed the Uchiha in charge of the Konoha Military Police Force. While presented as an authority over public order and crime, the force overlapped heavily with the Anbu, Interrogation Department, and Investigation Department; its practical jurisdiction was largely limited to civilian disputes. Uchiha Jin later describes it as a means to confine the clan within the village and damage its reputation. 87

Following the war, the clan suffered heavy casualties but became markedly stronger: its surviving shinobi included high numbers of Sharingan users and elite combatants. Konoha’s leadership consequently withheld compensation and sought to use the Uchiha’s pride and duty to make them accept the loss. 71

Characteristics

The Uchiha are an ancient noble clan with strict internal systems and a long-established shinobi training tradition. Their bloodline, combat ability, and independent strength make Konoha’s leadership wary of them. 5 150

  • The clan is regarded as Konoha’s foremost noble clan and one of its strongest military forces. 108 150
  • Uchiha emotions are described as deeply felt but poorly expressed; accumulated sensitivity and concern over others’ judgment can manifest as arrogance and stubbornness. 119
  • Their reputation among villagers deteriorates through the Military Police Force’s unpopular work, longstanding prejudice associated with Uchiha Madara, and organized rumors portraying the clan as inherently evil. 87 101 314
  • The clan historically responds better to conciliation than coercion, but is vulnerable to manipulation by political schemers. 330

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

The clan’s kekkei genkai is the Sharingan, a dōjutsu associated with exceptional genjutsu and combat perception. It can trap an opponent in illusion through eye contact, making isolated fights against an Uchiha especially dangerous. 4

  • The Sharingan awakens and develops through powerful emotional fluctuations, particularly experiences of loss on the battlefield. 5 150
  • A Three-Tomoe Sharingan user is considered at least jonin-level, often surpassing an average jonin. 150
  • The clan’s wartime losses can increase the quality of its survivors as emotional trauma drives further awakenings and evolution. 5 71
  • In group battles, allies can help one another break genjutsu, reducing an individual Uchiha’s advantage. 4

Mangekyo Sharingan

The Mangekyo Sharingan is an exceptionally rare evolution of the Sharingan. Two Uchiha awakened it during the war, while Uchiha Fugaku, Uchiha Jin, and Uchiha Shisui later displayed Mangekyo Sharingan and Susanoo at the clan assembly. 5 130

  • Its techniques, including Susanoo, impose progressive damage on the user’s eyesight. 217
  • Higher stages of Susanoo demand even greater ocular strain. 217
  • Complete Body Susanoo requires the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. 217

Genjutsu

The Uchiha are noted throughout the ninja world for their genjutsu proficiency.

  • A single glance from a Sharingan user can place an enemy under illusion. 4
  • The fear of this ability produced the saying that one should flee a one-on-one battle with an Uchiha. 4 150

Organization and Strength

At the secret Naka River Shrine assembly, more than four hundred Uchiha shinobi gathered. Their distribution reflected an unusually elite force compared with typical clans. 126

Shinobi category Documented number Notes
Three-Tomoe Sharingan jonin 74 Jonin-level combatants 126
Two-Tomoe Sharingan special jonin / elite chunin 317 Core veteran force 126
Chunin without awakened bloodline 29 Documented at the assembly 126
Other attendees Not specified Genin with One-Tomoe Sharingan or no awakened Sharingan 126

The clan’s postwar genin–chunin–jonin ratio was described as approximately five-to-four-to-one, compared with the usual seven-to-two-point-five-to-zero-point-five ratio in other clans. 126

Later reforms dispersed many Uchiha into village departments, including the Anbu, while leaving three to four hundred serving across those institutions and approximately five hundred additional Uchiha shinobi available to the clan. 420 421

Political Factions

Radical faction

Led by Great Elder Uchiha Setsuna, the radicals argue that the clan deserves greater recognition and power. Setsuna considers a coup and the seizure of the Hokage position as means to restore Uchiha standing. 105 108

Conservative faction

Led by Second Elder Uchiha Ya, the conservatives prioritize damage control, negotiation, and the clan’s survival within Konoha. Ya opposes actions that could provoke the entire village into destroying the clan. 105 108 110

Uchiha Jin’s leadership

Uchiha Jin rejects both an impulsive coup and passive submission. He argues that the clan needs allies, public support, and a clearer distinction between Konoha as a village and the Hokage’s faction before it can secure lasting influence. 131 133

At the clan assembly, Jin secured overwhelming support after displaying Sharingan Conqueror’s Haki alongside the Mangekyo Sharingan and Susanoo of Fugaku and Shisui. Fugaku stepped down, and Jin became both clan head and head of the Konoha Military Police Force. 130 141

Konoha Military Police Force

The Military Police Force was originally a Uchiha-controlled institution responsible for public safety, maintaining order, and apprehending criminals or ninjas with criminal tendencies. 87

Its role became a major source of tension:

  • Overlapping village departments restricted its effective power. 87
  • Uchiha officers frequently handled minor civilian disputes, creating resentment and reinforcing the clan’s poor public image. 87
  • Under later reforms, the force became a village department rather than an exclusively Uchiha institution, though many Uchiha retained key posts. 421
  • The reformed force was organized across East, South, West, North, and Central districts, with branch stations and a central headquarters overseeing action battalions. 317

Relationships

  • Konohagakure — Founding partner and home village; the relationship is defined by Uchiha contributions, institutional restriction, and recurring political conflict. 123 87
  • Senju Clan — Historical rival clan descended from Asura; their ancestral conflict is tied to the rivalry between Indra and Asura. 415
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen and the Konoha elders — Political adversaries who restrict compensation, tolerate or direct anti-Uchiha pressure, and fear the clan’s growing strength. 71 101 143
  • Hyuga Clan — Former rival noble clan that develops an alliance with Uchiha Jin and Minato’s faction. 277 445
  • Minato Namikaze — Strategic ally of Uchiha Jin; supports reforms to the Military Police Force and village law. 135 314
  • Fire Daimyo — Grants the clan increasing favor, entrusting it with Konoha subsidy funds and future financial dealings. 173 246

Major Arcs

Postwar repression

After suffering nearly one hundred losses, the Uchiha emerge from the war stronger than before. Konoha’s leadership responds by withholding compensation, treating the clan as an example to discourage other clans from making claims. 71

Internal crisis and leadership transition

Rumors, Anbu surveillance, and factional conflict drive the clan toward a decisive assembly at the Naka River Shrine. Uchiha Jin replaces Fugaku as clan head, defeating the elders’ resistance through political argument and a public display of overwhelming strength. 101 126 130 141

Institutional reform

With Minato’s support, the clan pushes to restructure the Military Police Force, revise laws, and redistribute Konoha’s administrative authority. Uchiha members retain major institutional influence while reforms open some positions to other clans and civilians. 314 317

Ascendancy in Konoha

The clan gains control over Daimyo subsidy funds, secures expanded political leverage, and becomes a central power alongside Minato’s faction. Sarutobi Hiruzen later acknowledges that most village power has shifted to the Uchiha–Minato alliance. 173 228 326

Conflict with the Three Clans Allied Forces

When Sarutobi Hiruzen orders a full-scale assault, the Uchiha defend their territory with the Uchiha Flame Array and reveal that they anticipated the allied clans’ plan. Uchiha Jin’s reinforcements arrive by Konokuni’s Flying Technique. 458

Trivia

  • The Uchiha Shrine stands on the Naka River at the clan’s ancestral land, where the clan holds sacrifices for fallen warriors and honors its ancestors. 123
  • During one clan sacrifice, thousands of members—from elders to young children—wore black and joined the procession to the shrine. 123
  • Uchiha Jin states that the clan can still provide roughly five hundred personnel for a planned unification force even after accounting for members assigned to village departments. 420
