Background and History
Obito served under Minato Namikaze alongside Hatake Kakashi and Nohara Rin. During the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, he was severely injured and buried beneath rocks while saving Kakashi; he entrusted Rin to Kakashi and gave Kakashi a Sharingan. Believed dead, Obito was taken in and physically modified by Uchiha Madara 12 88 90.
Madara had watched Obito for years and engineered the circumstances in which he saw Rin apparently die at Kakashi’s hands. The trauma drove Obito to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan and embrace Madara’s vision of replacing the real world with an illusory one. Madara passed on his knowledge and name, making Obito his spokesperson and assigning him to watch Nagato and advance the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan. Rin had, however, survived through Jin’s intervention 50 89 90 416.
In the Land of Rain, Obito sought to turn Nagato against Yahiko’s Akatsuki. He targeted Yahiko and Konan while disguised as a Konoha ninja, intending to make Root appear responsible. He spared Konan at the last moment but used Sharingan genjutsu to make Yahiko believe she had died. Yahiko’s refusal to condemn the world for his suffering unsettled Obito, and Jin intervened before Obito could kill him 44 46 47.
Jin subsequently exposed Madara’s manipulation and Black Zetsu’s identity to Obito. The two staged a confrontation to lure Black Zetsu into reach, allowing Obito to attack and restrain him. Jin then destroyed the control seal on Obito’s heart; Obito survived the otherwise fatal injury by sacrificing a Three-Tomoe Sharingan through Izanagi. He thereafter worked under Jin’s direction 50 53 58 60 82.
Obito remained out of sight until an impending invasion made secrecy untenable. He removed his disguise, put on his long-unused Konoha forehead protector, and delivered urgent intelligence to Minato in person. During the Battle of Kikyo Mountain Fortress, he defended the Third Mountain with Kakashi and broke through the enemy there 191 193 212 214.
Appearance
After returning openly to Konoha, Obito is described as a youth with severe disfigurement on the right half of his face 193.
- Wears the Uchiha Clan’s fan crest on his clothing 191 425.
- Conceals his face behind a mask during covert operations 48 60.
- Wears a Konoha forehead protector when he reveals himself to Minato 191 193.
Personality
As a child, Obito was earnest but academically weak; Jin describes him as innocent rather than unintelligent. After Rin’s apparent death, his grief hardened into resentment toward Minato and the world. Yet Yahiko’s resolve affected him precisely because it recalled the person Obito had once been 12 47 49 416.
Obito can be impulsive: in the fight with Shinno, anger nearly made him forget that their mission was to capture their target alive. He also adapts under pressure, finding a way to counterattack without waiting for Jin to rescue him. Later assessments credit his improved combat instincts while noting that his academic knowledge has not improved to the same degree 427 428 434.
Abilities and Skills
Kamui
Obito’s Mangekyō space-time technique lets him travel through Kamui Space and avoid attacks by shifting threatened parts of his body into it 58 426.
- Can appear at distant positions and bypass physical barriers during infiltration 44 432.
- Can remain intangible for up to ten minutes at a time with both eyes 426.
- Transferring his entire body into Kamui Space takes time; he cannot remain intangible while completing that transfer 58 426.
- Shinno’s attack distorted space itself and managed to injure him despite his attempted intangibility 429.
Sharingan, genjutsu, and Susanoo
- Used Sharingan genjutsu to make Yahiko believe Konan had died 47.
- His ordinary genjutsu failed against Shinno while the latter’s Eight Gates state made his chakra too chaotic for it to take hold 428.
- Used a third-form Susanoo to defend against Shinno, then counterattacked with Kamui Shuriken that created spatial vortices 427.
- His Susanoo was later destroyed by Shinno’s stronger Evening Elephant attack 428.
Hashirama Cells and other techniques
- Madara’s modification replaced part of Obito’s body with Hashirama Cells. They aid his recovery and offset Mangekyō pupil-power consumption 44 259 429.
- Can use Wood Style, though he rarely does because his proficiency is limited 429.
- Used Yin–Yang Release to form a black rod for his surprise attack on Black Zetsu 58.
- Used Izanagi to survive the destruction of his heart and its control seal, at the cost of one Three-Tomoe Sharingan 60.
- Has used Fire Release, including the Great Fireball Technique and Fire Style: Blast Wave 44 427.
