"Who is that?" Brat and his companion stared in astonishment.

"Sheriff Ragnar, hehe..." Anse deliberately altered his voice, and it really did sound somewhat similar.

This was a first-circle Illusionary Disguise Technique, also known as Disguise Self. His build was fake, and so were the armor and great axe.

However, to see through his illusion, someone first had to become suspicious, study his appearance and behavior, then pass an Intelligence (Investigation) check.

Since the dead could talk, he might as well let the slavers die confused and drag the utterly useless Sheriff into this as well.

It did not matter if he was exposed. This was only an attempt, anyway.

"Let's go." He pulled on his hood and quietly headed downstairs.

The first floor was dimly lit. A male Elf waiter was on duty, and though he looked puzzled upon seeing Anse's back, he did not stop or inspect him.

Anse headed northwest toward the bay, with Gray Hawk circling overhead.

The waters where the [Conch] was anchored were quite secluded. There were no docks nearby, and the lights were sparse. The location had clearly been chosen deliberately.

Twenty or thirty minutes later, he reached the shore. The surroundings were silent—no birds, no human voices, only the pitch-black seawater.

The moonlight was faint tonight, and the sea was dark. He could only vaguely make out a large shadow in the distance. For some reason, the [Conch] had not lit its lamps.

"They aren't planning to run, are they?"

Anse took off his shoes, carefully tucked them behind several broken rocks, then placed a hand on the wand at his waist.
