"Crack—"
A faint but clear sound made the hearts of the group and their dog skip a beat. Everyone's attention turned to the egg.
A nearly imperceptible crack appeared on the eggshell. Pale golden light seeped through, forming tiny shafts in the air.
The dragon egg began to tremble slightly, and the crack spread rapidly like a spiderweb. Suddenly, a louder cracking sound rang out.
The top of the eggshell was pushed open, and the tip of a wet, black wing poked out, flapping clumsily in the air.
Though the wingtip was small, its sharp outline was already visible. Tiny claws glinted with a cold, metallic sheen.
Suddenly, the egg was struck with greater force. Shell fragments flew everywhere, and a little black head thrust out.
The group couldn't help drawing in a sharp breath. Those eyes! They gleamed like molten gold.
The little black dragon pushed itself all the way out and let out a cry of "Raa!" Its voice was a little shrill, but carried an undeniable power, as if reminding everyone that no matter how small it was, it was still a dragon.
Two tiny horns sprouted from its head. Instead of white breath, smoke flecked with sparks puffed from its nostrils.
It shook its head, flinging slime everywhere, then tilted it and curiously surveyed its surroundings with big amber eyes.
Hagrid slowly extended a finger, as if hoping to pet the little creature that had just entered the world without frightening it.
"Hello there, little one," Hagrid said softly, his voice trembling with excitement. The little black dragon didn't back away. Instead, it took a step forward and gently touched Hagrid's finger with its wet nose.
"Look, it recognizes its mother!" Hagrid cried excitedly.
The young wizards in the hut were utterly stunned by the sight.
