Background / History
Orochimaru served in Root under Danzo, including as his deputy. Root's records identify him as a voluntarily recruited member who could come and go without receiving the Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal 99 112.
During the Ninja World War, he infiltrated Kumogakure and caused its Eight-Tails jinchūriki to go berserk, inflicting severe losses. The Kaguya Clan head remembers this operation, and Orochimaru later refers to his involvement with Blue B 149 198.
He competed for the Fourth Hokage position but lost to Minato. Afterward, he withdrew into laboratory work and conducted Wood Style human experiments. The project's high mortality rate and his unauthorized recruitment of ordinary civilians led Hiruzen to halt it; Orochimaru then defected from Konoha 99 100. Years later, he still associates Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique with his electoral defeat 169.
After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru maintained contact with Danzo and planted spies in the village. He joined Akatsuki after being defeated by the Rinnegan and was paired with Sasori, whose approach to immortality differed sharply from his own 63 101 105.
Appearance
Orochimaru initially appears as a gentle-looking young man, despite being nearly fifty. His youthful appearance contrasts with the fear his reputation inspires in Kakashi 51.
- Snake-like eyes — scrutinizes Youhu and Karin with a distinctly serpentine gaze 62.
- Sharp tongue — licks his cheek after deliberately taking Kakashi's Chidori 54.
- Fire Cloud Robe — wears the same organization clothing as Kakuzu 51.
- White-snake bodies — appears in this form when summoned by Kabuto and when visiting Danzo 105 106.
- Mutable physique — can elongate his neck, distort his body, shed his skin, and replace his vessel 54 107 150 202.
Personality
Orochimaru combines an affable manner with intimidation. He greets Kakashi and Itachi as familiar village geniuses while making their release conditional on useful intelligence. In battle, he deliberately allows Kakashi to land Chidori and treats the encounter as an opportunity to toy with him 51 54.
His interest in exceptional ninja is inseparable from research. Karin's Uzumaki ancestry makes her valuable to him, while Youhu's unexplained strength prompts speculation about bloodline transplantation. His confidence can also make him susceptible to deception: he constructs an elaborate explanation that Youhu is Danzo's Wood Style test subject, which Youhu merely needs to affirm 62.
He enjoys provoking others, especially Danzo and Sasori, but avoids unnecessary danger. He abandons Danzo when Jiraiya confronts them and uses Manda to cover another retreat rather than continue fighting the powerful “Hyuga Tennin” 107 151 174.
Knowledge and power matter more to him than protecting the ninja world. He accepts Youhu's proposal to hunt gods despite the possibility of permanent death, then explicitly rejects Tobirama's assumption that he has agreed to save the world 202.
Abilities & Skills
Overall Combat Strength
- Kage-level fighter — Youhu assesses his strength and chakra as comparable to Jiraiya's 199.
- Overwhelming against younger opponents — Kakashi and Itachi struggle to threaten him during their encounter near Kusagakure 51 54.
- Not invulnerable to stronger techniques — Itachi's Susanoo blocks his Kusanagi Sword, while Tsukuyomi severely weakens him 179 180.
Regeneration and Bodily Modification
- Rapid wound repair — restores the hole left by Chidori without visible scarring 54.
- Elastic body — recovers immediately after his torso is twisted by Youhu's punch 150.
- Extended neck — wraps it repeatedly around Itachi to restrain him 54.
- Skin-shedding escape — transforms into a small snake and disappears into the forest 107.
- Recovery after burning — reappears after Itachi reduces his restrained body to charred remains 179.
- Limits — becomes wary when Youhu switches from blunt attacks to sword strikes aimed at severing his chakra meridians 150 151.
Soul Reincarnation and Immortality Research
- Living Corpse Reincarnation — uses possession and vessel replacement as his route toward immortality 105 107.
- Soul division — maintains multiple bodies, including a white snake that Kabuto can summon 105.
- Research origins — initially studies Impure World Reincarnation in hopes of performing reincarnation while still alive; at that point, progress is limited 63.
- Vessel replacement — has demonstrably changed bodies by his later meeting with Youhu 202.
- Claimed consent — tells Danzo that the people whose bodies he took were willing participants 147.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru improves the forbidden technique and uses the dead as combat assets and research tools 63 164.
- Hokage summons — revives Hashirama and Tobirama at approximately 50% of their former strength 164.
- Control restraints — restricts their actions and later uses Curse Marks to direct them during the attack on Naruto 164 206.
- Jinchūriki revival — resurrects Bunpuku and Blue B, allowing Akatsuki to access chakra retained by deceased hosts 197 198.
- Requirements — identifies information about the deceased, bodily material, and sacrificial bodies as necessary preparations 197.
- Control risks — avoids summoning an excessively powerful body that could turn against him; Blue B nevertheless breaks free and attacks him 174 198.
- Soul availability — cannot successfully summon Nohara Rin, leading him to question whether she is truly dead 197 198.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
- Surveillance — uses poisonous snakes to track Youhu and Karin 60 61.
- Defense — a large python intercepts Itachi's Phoenix Sage Fire attack 54.
- Mass summoning — calls forth hundreds or thousands of pythons against the Kaguya Clan 150.
- Shadow Snake Hand — transforms his arm into a giant python; Youhu cuts it apart before it reaches him 151.
- Manda — summons the colossal snake during his retreat from the Kaguya Clan confrontation 151.
- Storage and delivery — summoned vipers carry research scrolls and spit them out for Youhu 63.
Bloodline Research and Curse Marks
- Wood Style transplantation — develops research that produces Yamato as a successful subject, though he initially fails to recognize Yamato's survival 62 105 106.
- Sharingan–Wood Style interaction — proposes using Sharingan to suppress Wood Style cells 201.
- Shikotsumyaku experiments — transplants Kaguya cells into a subject, who dies from bloodline rejection 171.
- Natural-energy research — studies Jūgo's innate ability to use natural energy and develops a related technique 171.
- Changing subject recruitment — his earlier Konoha work involves deceiving civilians, whereas the subjects Tobirama observes in Otogakure volunteer for a small chance of becoming powerful ninja 100 171.
Intelligence and Manipulation
- Konoha spy network — receives information about village developments without entering personally 63 132.
- Political analysis — recognizes that Youhu's request to contact Danzo is intended to make Danzo's collusion with a rogue ninja undeniable 105.
- Concealment — presents the reanimated Hokage to Sasori as ninja implanted with the First and Second Hokages' cells 174.
- Mission deception — claims his group could not safely approach Naruto, concealing that they remained in Otogakure developing counters to Pain 196.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — used against Itachi's Susanoo, but cannot pierce its skeletal defense 179.
- Wood Style research scroll — includes transplantation data and some of Hashirama's ninjutsu; traded to Youhu 63.
- Improved Impure World Reincarnation scroll — supplied alongside the Wood Style data 63.
- Youhu and Karin's blood samples — obtained in exchange for the two research scrolls 63.
- Black Rod — gifted by Youhu after their alliance; Tobirama identifies its potential to restrict chakra flow and substitute for chakra threads 202.
Relationships
- Uchiha Youhu — research partner and eventual ally. Youhu first exploits his mistaken belief that he is Danzo's subordinate, then recruits him into a plan to seize divine knowledge and power 62 63 202.
- Shimura Danzo — former superior and uneasy collaborator. Orochimaru says Danzo betrayed him; he later shelters and mocks him while hoping to obtain the Mangekyō Sharingan he believes Danzo possesses 63 106 132.
- Jiraiya — former comrade and persistent pursuer. Jiraiya repeatedly tries to bring him back to Konoha for supervised research, without success 54 99 107.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — former teacher and Hokage who discovers his civilian experiments. Orochimaru later participates in plans targeting Hiruzen 99 195 206.
- Kabuto Yakushi — subordinate and intermediary who summons one of his white-snake bodies to deliver Youhu's letter 105.
- Uchiha Itachi — former object of interest and later opponent. Their early conversation about life's meaning nearly drives Itachi to suicide; their later battle exposes Orochimaru's vulnerability to Tsukuyomi 179 180.
- Sasori — Akatsuki teammate and rival researcher. Sasori pursues puppet immortality, while Orochimaru favors replacing living bodies 105 174.
- Pain / Nagato — Akatsuki leader whose Rinnegan forces Orochimaru into the organization. Orochimaru later conspires against him and covets his eyes 105 196 198 203.
- Tobirama Senju — reanimated summon and intellectual collaborator. They share an interest in forbidden research, but disagree over whether Youhu should be stopped 171 202.
- Hashirama Senju — powerful reanimated summon whose true strength makes Orochimaru question the reliability of his restraints 170 174.
- Karin — prospective research subject valued for her rare Uzumaki ancestry; visibly frightened by his demand for blood 62.
- Yamato — successful survivor of his Wood Style project, whom Orochimaru initially overlooks 62 106.

- Overpowers Kakashi and Itachi before retreating when Jiraiya arrives 54.
- Tracks Karin, then mistakes Youhu for a Root operative with transplanted Wood Style 60 61 62.
- Trades research for blood samples and learns from Youhu that the masked attacker is Obito 63.
Danzo's Defection and the Land of Water
- Responds to Youhu's letter by visiting the newly disgraced Danzo and offering him the “Hokage” position in his own village 105 106.
- Escapes Jiraiya's confrontation, leaving Danzo to face Gamabunta 107.
- Continues cooperating with Kakuzu under an arrangement that gives Orochimaru the corpse and Kakuzu the bounty 132.
- Abducts a Kaguya child with Danzo to obtain Shikotsumyaku; their attempt is disrupted by Youhu posing as Hyuga Tennin 149 150.
- Summons Manda and withdraws after Youhu's swordsmanship threatens him 151.
Otogakure and the Reanimated Hokage

- Introduces Tobirama to his biological experiments and natural-energy research 171.
- Brings the group into Akatsuki's orbit while disguising the Hokage as experimental subjects 174 176.
- Attacks Itachi but cannot penetrate Susanoo; seventy-two hours of Tsukuyomi torture exhaust his mental energy and prevent him from refining sufficient chakra. Itachi obtains no important information and does not completely sever his connection to the reanimated Hokage 179 180.
Failed Konoha Plans and Akatsuki's Chakra Collection
- His proposed alliance with the Fourth Kazekage would have killed Hiruzen during the Chūnin Exam, installed Orochimaru as Fifth Hokage, and permitted Sunagakure's expansion into the Land of Rivers. Akatsuki's escalating activities derail the plan before execution 195.
- Returns to Akatsuki without Naruto, concealing his group's work on anti-Rinnegan techniques in Otogakure 196.
- Is compelled to revive former jinchūriki for Pain. The Human Path defeats Bunpuku, Rin's summoning fails, and Blue B breaks free to attack him 197 198.
Alliance to Hunt Gods
- Learns that Youhu has replaced the masked man and witnesses Danzo's defeat and reanimation 200 201.
- Listens skeptically to Youhu's account of the ninja world's origins, questioning why Nagato is being allowed to revive the Ten-Tails 202.
- Accepts an alliance to hunt divine beings and seize their knowledge and power, despite the risk of a death beyond reincarnation 202.
- Agrees to ambush Pain, motivated by the prospect of obtaining the Rinnegan 203.
- Subsequently leads Akatsuki's attack on Naruto and the Six-Tails jinchūriki, controlling the reanimated Hokage as Jiraiya and Tsunade intervene 206.
Notable Quotes
“Inviting me to hunt the gods of the Ninja World... Youhu-kun, you really are bold. But I like this bold plan. Still, if things go wrong, both of us will die—the kind of death where even reincarnation is impossible.” 202
“I agreed to kill the Sage of Six Paths with Youhu and seize the Sage of Six Paths' knowledge and power. I have no interest whatsoever in saving the Ninja World.” 202
Trivia
- Youhu calls him the ninja world's “angel investor” after receiving Wood Style data and Impure World Reincarnation so readily 63.
- He initially dismisses the Mangekyō Sharingan as little more than another pair of Sharingan, then later seeks Danzo's presumed Mangekyō and is stunned by Itachi's Susanoo 105 132 179.
- Youhu falsely attributes Uchiha Hikari's rescue to an escape from Orochimaru's laboratory; her actual discovery occurs in a sealed coffin in the Senju Ruins 151 157.
