Background / History
Rono completed Hell Training at age fifteen, surviving a lightning strike that left his body repeatedly burned, cracked, and regenerated. Shortly afterward, he boarded an attacking pirate ship, discovered a Devil Fruit in the captain’s cabin, and consumed it while under gunfire. 2 3
He was originally a Marine soldier before being recruited into CP9 by the CP0 member Mo. While traveling toward Enies Lobby, he concealed his identity by posing as Rob Lucci’s cousin. 14 22
The World Government later appointed him a Shichibukai. With the Gongdongtalio Family’s approval, he formed the Red Devil Pirates and repeatedly hunted pirate crews around Alabasta; the route became known among pirates as the “Death Route,” while Rono gained the name Red Devil. 24 27
After Jinbe’s death, Rono lost his Shichibukai title and received a 450,000,000 Berry bounty. His influence nevertheless continued to grow through the Red Devil Pirates and Baroque Works, eventually making his organization one of the world’s most feared pirate forces. 66 71
Appearance
Rono is an exceptionally tall, heavily built man whose body changes noticeably as his physical enhancements develop. He is most often identified by red hair, a bare upper body, and the bone-based weapons or armor he produces in combat. 18 28 120
- His recorded height rose from 2.5 m to 3.73 m, then 3.80 m. 21 28 120
- His hair is normally red; it was white during the period surrounding the revocation of his Shichibukai title. 18 70
- He later cuts his hair short. 120
- Scarlet Armament causes his skin to peel away and reveal hardened crimson muscle tissue. 33 75
- Severe combat stress can leave him hunched, red-eyed, and visibly beastlike. 77
Personality
Rono is impulsive, confrontational, and eager to test himself against strong opponents. He often answers danger by escalating it, whether challenging pirate crews, retaliating against Marines, or accepting Doflamingo’s proposal to oppose Kaido. 28 66 73
He is also openly cruel in battle. He kills enemies without hesitation, tortures Buggy for entertainment, and considers most opponents too weak to merit serious effort. His reputation is reinforced by accounts of mass killings carried out by both him and his subordinates. 3 122 132 201
Despite this brutality, Rono is protective of those he considers family. Jinbe throwing Gelu toward the sea provoked an immediate violent reaction, and Rono moved to protect Sairona when Akainu targeted her. He also shows genuine affection for Gelu and concern for Rayleigh’s survival. 69 70 166
Rono dislikes betrayal intensely and condemns Trafalgar Law for turning against the Donquixote Family. He is comparatively blunt about diplomacy, often leaving negotiations to Sairona. 201 220
Abilities & Skills
Self-Healing Factor
Rono possesses an innate regenerative ability described by the system as Super Regeneration.
- He heals gunshot wounds, including a headshot, and regenerates severed limbs. 19 77
- His regeneration is not a Devil Fruit ability; Seastone can limit his Devil Fruit powers without disabling this healing factor. 54
- He defeated Ryokugyu by enduring repeated damage until he could outlast him. 88
- Extreme damage, cursed flames, and prolonged combat can still leave him incapacitated or in need of recovery time. 88 100 164
Bone Claws and Bone Planting Armor
Rono can grow and manipulate hardened bone structures through his Control-Control Fruit.
- Bone Claws — retractable claws with hardness comparable to Great Grade Swords; they can cut weapons and tear through opponents. 28 206
- Bone Planting Armor — covers his body in defensive bone armor capable of resisting ordinary bullets. 17 66
- White Bone Armor — a more aggressive armor configuration with barbs and reshaped limbs. 75 76
- Bone hammers — transforms his arms into massive hammerheads to overcome opponents whose bodies diffuse piercing damage. 76
- Spiral Bone Drill — forms a rotating drill from his wrist; a smaller version improves flexibility and reduces stamina consumption. 75
- Pseudo-Early Fern Dance — launches destructive bone spikes from the ground across a wide area; it later defeats Timothy Hood. 115 166
- Seastone interference can force his Devil Fruit forms to fail. 75
Earth Manipulation
Rono can manipulate earth and soil as an application of his Devil Fruit.
- Creates a Mud Pit to destabilize or trap opponents. 69
- Raises earthen walls to obstruct attacks or create openings. 77
- Uses soil to immobilize Shanks’ feet during his battle alongside Kaido. 217
Haki
Rono wields all three major forms of Haki.
- Armament Haki — coats his claws, limbs, and attacks to increase their striking and cutting power. 30 51 206
- Observation Haki — detects hidden enemies, senses distant presences, and perceives details beyond normal hearing. 51 176
- Conqueror’s Haki — overwhelms weaker enemies and can be directed to spare selected allies. 107 201
- His Conqueror’s Haki is inferior to Shanks’ in a direct clash. 217
Combat Modes and Physical Techniques
Rono supplements his Devil Fruit with extreme physical strength and Marine techniques.
- Berserker Mode enhances his fighting ability but suppresses his emotions and risks loss of control. 3
- Scarlet Armament exposes and hardens crimson muscle tissue for explosive physical power. 33 75
- Uses Geppo, Soru, and Iron Body for aerial movement, burst speed, and defense. 33 76 126
- His main weakness is a lack of long-range options against coordinated ranged opponents. 172
System
Rono is assisted by a sentient system that provides status panels, missions, Enhancement Points, simulations, and equipment upgrades.
- Enhancement Points can improve his attributes, Haki, equipment, and Magic Marks. 28 38 192
- The system can impose penalties for failed missions and secretly deduct rewards as “rent.” 42 78
- Its simulation space exposes weaknesses in Rono’s fighting style, particularly against mobile long-range opponents. 82 172
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Flowing Fire — upgraded pale-red armguards that increase his fist power by four to five times, adapt to his bone claws, and consume little stamina. Rono later loses them during the period of his presumed death. 38 78 100
- Black Ring — worn on his right fist and activated during combat against the sharks. 193
- Red Devil — Rono’s red pirate ship, used by the Red Devil Pirates for high-speed travel. 138 199
Relationships
- Sairona — Second-in-command, sniper, and long-term battle partner. Sairona recognizes Rono as captain, repeatedly fights beside him, and handles negotiations that Rono prefers to avoid. 22 36 70 220
- Gelu — Rono’s son. Rono is openly affectionate toward Gelu and reacts violently to threats against him. 33 69
- Nami — Rono’s wife and a member of his crew. She nurses him during his recovery and later travels with him to Cake Island. 145 200 220
- Silvers Rayleigh / Reili — Mentor and master. Rono seeks Rayleigh’s instruction because his techniques were developed through self-taught combat; Rayleigh later accepts him as a disciple. 107 112 115
- Donquixote Doflamingo — Ally and occasional sparring partner. Their alliance includes joint battles, mutual favors, and a campaign against Kaido. 29 66 73 78
- Monkey D. Luffy — Initially spared after Kino’s plea, later becomes Rono’s sparring partner and intermittent opponent. Their relationship remains strained by Rono’s actions and alliances. 121 161 200
- Gecko Moria — A fearful fellow former Shichibukai who complies with Rono’s demand to return Brook’s shadow. 36
- Brook — Owes Rono for recovering his shadow, creating a conflict of loyalty when Rono later faces the Straw Hats. 36 201
