Background / History

Madara grew up during the Warring States Period, when the Uchiha and Senju repeatedly fought as mercenary clans. The deaths of his father and younger brothers made him hate war and seek a way to end it permanently. His bond with Hashirama Senju began before they knew each other’s clan identities, but their friendship collapsed once the Uchiha–Senju conflict intervened; Madara’s Sharingan awakened after losing Hashirama as a friend. 389 554

Madara and Hashirama rose to lead their respective clans, ultimately joining to establish Konoha. Madara later concluded that the village’s peace concealed Senju domination and eventual oppression of the Uchiha. When he tried to lead the Uchiha out of Konoha, no one followed him; he left alone, fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End, and staged his death. 3 386 393

After being abandoned by his clan, Madara found the Moon Eye Plan recorded on the Uchiha Stone Tablet and adopted it as an alternative to Hashirama’s village system. He began a decades-long scheme to acquire the Tailed Beasts, restore the Ten-Tails, and impose an illusionary peace upon the world. 393 503

While hidden underground, Madara sustained himself through the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and cultivated White Zetsu using Hashirama Cells. His forces included original White Zetsu prototypes associated with the statue as well as clones he cultivated through Hashirama Cells and the statue’s energy. He originally intended for Nagato to revive him through the Rinnegan and prepared Obito as a successor for the Moon Eye Plan. Ryobu’s forbidden rejuvenation technique gave him a faster route back to power, prompting him to interfere with Ryobu’s escape and pursue the technique directly. 3

After regaining youth, Madara pursued the Rinnegan, the Tailed Beasts, and control of Amegakure. He openly declared his intent to impose the Infinite Tsukuyomi, considering a peaceful illusion the only lasting answer to war. 101 126 140

Madara’s final campaign ended when the Ninja Alliance, the Tailed Beasts, and Mount Myōboku forces gradually extracted the beasts from his half-finished Six Paths vessel. Obito’s Kamui enabled the Third Hokage to catch Madara with the Reaper Death Seal, sealing Madara’s soul. Madara was initially an elderly, white-haired man who relied on a cane and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for survival. After rejuvenation, he resumed the imposing appearance of a Warring States-era Uchiha warrior. 3 26

Personality

Madara considered himself a pacifist rather than a simple seeker of power. Having lost nearly all of his family to war, he became convinced that ordinary political peace could only delay further conflict. The Moon Eye Plan was his answer: a world where every person lived within a dream free of suffering, greed, and war. 389 391 554

His idealism did not prevent him from treating others as tools. He arranged Obito’s despair, used Nagato as a Rinnegan host, manipulated the Third Mizukage, and attempted to control both Obito and Ryobu. 3 44 516 Madara was ruthless toward opposition, but retained a complicated respect for Hashirama, whom he regarded as a kindred spirit despite their opposing visions. 44 535
