Although he acquired a Soul Master's basic knowledge, he lacked access to advanced cultivation secrets, particularly methods involving Spiritual Power. Before him, the Dugu lineage's highest confirmed cultivator had been a Soul Saint; Soul Douluo ancestors were only rumored 72.

His family's inherited poison developed through a process they did not understand. Their Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Souls absorbed the origins of poisonous soul beasts through Soul Rings, using their owners' bodies as vessels. Across generations, unsuitable family members died early, while surviving descendants developed constitutions increasingly suited to nurturing this poison 62 64.

Dugu Bo became the culmination of that process: his body housed a mature, Gu King-like poison that consumed his own energy. It granted exceptional toxicity but caused decades of pain, threatened his life, and halted his advancement.
