Background

Ning Zhiyuan was a talented disciple of Qingcang Academy's Outer Court and a member of a collateral Ning Family branch. Despite his collateral status, he received resources and status through the family, as well as guidance from Inner Court disciple Li Changfeng. His cultivation method and saber art made him a notable opponent among martial artists of the same realm. 1 2

He harbored feelings for Su Jin and viewed Qin Jue—Su Jin's childhood companion—as unworthy of standing beside her. After Su Jin rejected Ning Zhiyuan's invitation, he publicly challenged Qin Jue, intending to force him to recognize their disparity. 1

Ning Zhiyuan publicly challenged Qin Jue under Qingcang Academy's battle-merit rules, expecting to take half of Qin Jue's merits and drive him from the academy. He entered the match with a one-realm advantage and superior cultivation resources, but Qin Jue's swordsmanship suppressed him. 1 4

Ning Zhiyuan escalated with his layered saber attacks, including the Rippling Waves Strike, but Qin Jue countered with the Tide Rising Sword Technique and defeated him. The loss cost Ning Zhiyuan 160 Battle Merit points and left his meridians in chaos. 5 6

Descent into Obsession

Humiliated by the defeat and by Su Jin's disappointment, Ning Zhiyuan isolated himself in his cultivation chamber and became consumed by thoughts of killing Qin Jue. Ning Wuque exploited his desperation, offering the Blood Boiling Pill and Frost Blade while warning that failure would reduce him to managing mines. 25

Ning Zhiyuan consumed the pill, forcibly reached the Hundred Refinements Fifth Layer, and developed the third stance of the Thousand Waves Saber, Raging Waves. The power came at the cost of his foundation and life potential. 25

Life-and-Death Duel and Death

Ning Zhiyuan challenged Qin Jue to a life-and-death duel, but Qin initially rejected him because Ning Zhiyuan had too few Battle Merits left to offer. Ning Wuque added one thousand Gold Notes, securing Qin Jue's acceptance. 31

Armed with the Frost Blade and boosted to the fifth layer, Ning Zhiyuan unleashed Raging Waves against Qin Jue. Qin Jue absorbed and redirected the attack with the Tidal Stance, then cut through Ning Zhiyuan's final saber energy using Cicada Wing · Thousand Layers. 32 33

The Frost Blade snapped, Ning Zhiyuan's body was cut by countless sword threads, and the pill's consequences left him desiccated as he died. 33 34
