"Our world went through an apocalypse, and there aren't many of us left alive." Zheng Da explained the destruction in the city. "Some animals evolved to be good at digging, so even the walls can't keep them out completely. We had to reinforce the inner city, so for safety's sake, people mostly stay there."
As they spoke, the vehicle passed through a towering gate.
Things behind the gate did look a little better than they had outside. The houses along both sides of the street were still sealed off with all kinds of salvaged metal strips, but everything looked much neater and cleaner.
The sound of the truck brought people streaming out of the buildings. When they heard the driver say, "We have guests," the hope in their faces turned to excitement. Some even rushed over to the truck, jostling to get a look at the people inside.
Their behavior seemed a little off to everyone, not just the players but even the people from Zone 002.
"Everyone, give them some room! Don't scare our guests!" Zheng Da shouted from the back of the truck. They backed off a little, but all of them still craned their necks to stare.
"Sorry about that. You know the conditions here aren't good, and there isn't enough food. People are usually hungry, so they're especially eager to see guests." He turned back to explain to Xu Huo and the others. "When guests arrive, the guards slaughter a cow to welcome them, and everyone gets to eat a good meal."
"I see." Uncle Guan sighed with feeling.
Xu Huo leaned against the back of the truck, watching the people left behind as it drove on. They weren't exactly gaunt, but none of them looked very healthy. Their teeth stood out in particular,
