Bai Kou sat by the window in the second-floor lounge. She was reading a book as she pushed the hot tea in front of her away, tapping her fingertips on the table. "Mr. Dong, get me something cold to drink."

Mr. Dong, who rarely showed any expression, replied with a stony face, "I just replaced it with a cold drink."

"That one was too cold." Bai Kou showed no awareness of how much trouble she was causing. "Don't you have a thermometer? If you can't even do this, maybe you shouldn't be a butler anymore."

Mr. Dong carried the tea away without changing his expression.

Bai Kou gave his back a cold look, then turned to the little girl in front, who was crouched in the flower bed, digging at the soil with her hair sticking straight up.

"You. Wash your hands, then cut me a couple of flowers," she said.

Xiao Yuan glanced at her, immediately dropped her tools, and ran to wash her hands. Once she was thoroughly clean, she went to the garden and picked several large roses. She wrapped them in paper and took them upstairs, then fetched a vase and a jug of water.

As Bai Kou trimmed the stems, she said, "Why are you staring at me?"

Xiao Yuan blushed. "Big Sister, you're so pretty."

Bai Kou shot her a glance. "I don't like people staring at me."

Xiao Yuan immediately lowered her head, then heard Bai Kou add, "And I don't like people who talk too much."

The little girl promptly clamped her mouth shut and stood there nervously. After a while, when Bai Kou still paid her no attention, she started to sneak away—only to hear Bai Kou say, "There's another one, isn't there? Go call her over."
