Hesitation
Bai Kou had no designs on what He Pu had left for Xu Huo. At most, she was a little curious. As it happened, she had business in District 001, so she followed the method He Pu had taught her and went to take a look. But the moment she touched the item, she knew it was a fake.
The facts were right there: He Pu had used this trick to guard against her.
Nothing could have hurt more.
Xu Huo could understand how she felt. He Pu, who had been like both a father and a friend to her, had died of illness without even notifying her. He had left most of his belongings to a complete stranger, and left him a special puzzle besides, one that had shut her out entirely. It was only natural for her to feel resentful.
As if he had seen what Xu Huo was thinking, Bai Kou gave a cold laugh. "You think I really care whether he lived or died?"
"That's for you to decide," Xu Huo replied mildly.
Bai Kou paused for a second, then said, "If I kill you, whatever he wanted to do will all be for nothing."
"It doesn't have to come to that." Xu Huo spoke as if they weren't discussing his life or death. "Secrets are best kept by as few people as possible. If the key to District 001 only concerns He Pu and me, it's perfectly normal that he didn't tell you."
He looked at her. "Why insist on knowing something that has nothing to do with you?"
Bai Kou had no answer. However she looked at it, Xu Huo had the upper hand. After a moment, she sneered. "People who are too good with words don't usually live long."
