Background / History

Mo Yuan conceived the banner after witnessing the Black Fiend Sect use a ghost-controlling black banner. Rather than replicate an evil Soul Devouring Banner, he intended to create a righteous artifact centered on containment and purification, allowing wandering spirits to release their obsessions and enter reincarnation. Uncle Nine approved the project while warning that soul-refining artifacts depended upon the wielder's heart. 9

The completed banner incorporated a Spirit Gathering Array, Soul Purification Array, and Soul Command Seal. Its command seal is an equal contract rather than enslavement: souls may leave once their wish-power dissipates or they are ready for reincarnation. 9

During Mo Yuan's journey to Blackwater Town, the banner successfully received and purified wandering spirits for the first time. It also absorbed a wisp of Mystic Yin Evil Qi, which its Purity Bamboo core slowly decomposed into pure Yin energy, reinforcing the banner's internal space. 10

Mo Yuan developed the banner through repeated acts of spirit salvation rather than conventional materials alone. Its advancement to Mid-Grade came after he purified groups of battlefield ghosts and village vengeful spirits; continued patrols around Ren Family Town later elevated it to High-Grade and helped Mo Yuan break through to Qi Refining Layer Seven through accumulated Yin virtue. 16 17

At the Provincial City's mortuary, the High-Grade banner unfolded its Pure Law Domain to suppress evil techniques and free trapped living souls. Its sensitivity to resentment and soul power also assisted Mo Yuan in locating the core connection of the Soul Refining formation used to refine the Ten Thousand Souls Banner. 19 21

The banner proved decisive during the Netherworld assassins' ambush. Its Purity Domain blocked soul-targeting attacks, suppressed the assassins' sinister cultivation, halted one attacker with its subjugation power, and sealed the courtyard to prevent their leader's escape. 32

After enduring intense pressure during the Yellow Springs crisis, the banner's spiritual light dimmed. Mo Yuan later restored it with True Essence and a wisp of Primordial Chaos Spiritual Energy, leaving its spirituality purer and more condensed than before. 49
