Penguin once said.
James Gordon might be the only good person in Gotham City.
But unfortunately, this place can't accommodate even a single good person.
From detective to commissioner, no one knows how many assassinations and attacks James Gordon has endured.
Though Commissioner Gordon is still a good man now, he's undoubtedly become much more polished, no longer as reckless as he was in his youth.
But his hatred of evil remains unchanged.
In the interrogation room of the Gotham Police Department, he sat alone across from Li Ang, taking his statement.
Once the statement was complete, James Gordon immediately asked, "Li Ang, you should tell me the truth."
In the statement just now, Li Ang had answered 'I don't know' to every question.
"I know the Iceberg Lounge is Penguin's crime den. This incident must be connected to his illegal activities."
"Just agree to become my informant..."
Before James Gordon could finish, Li Ang cut him off.
"Commissioner Gordon, you're a good person."
Over the years, countless people had said those exact words to James Gordon, so he immediately sensed trouble.
"When Kara and I first arrived in this city, you helped us."
"Now, through hard work, we've finally managed to survive in Gotham City. It hasn't been easy."
"She's studying hard, and I'm working hard—all for the sake of letting her grow up healthy and happy."
If this were his younger days, James Gordon would have used every means, even coercion and bribery, to make Li Ang help him.
But Commissioner Gordon now understood what Li Ang meant.
He couldn't ruin Li Ang and Kara's lives.
That was the polish he had learned.
Seeing James Gordon's expression soften, Li Ang immediately smiled. "Of course, I'm also a law-abiding citizen. If anything happens, I'll call the police right away."
With this way out, James Gordon nodded and said, "You can go."
Li Ang stood up, extended his hand, and said, "Thank you, Commissioner Gordon."
James Gordon said nothing, just looked at him, but eventually reached out and shook his hand.
Leaving the police station, it was already late at night.
Li Ang went to check on the Iceberg Lounge. It wasn't open for business today; they had cleaned everything up as fast as possible.
Since there was no work, he went straight home.
The Diamond District was on high alert these days, so even at this hour, there wasn't a single mugger on the streets.
In the old days, Li Ang would have been stopped several times.
Of course, smart as he was, he wouldn't have gone out anyway.
After all, a certain race had astonishing talents in the dark—as long as they didn't show their teeth, they could achieve near-invisibility.
Anyone who ran into them would have a headache.
Thump, thump, thump.
With Li Ang's current physical enhancement and sharpened five senses, he suddenly heard the sound of a cape flapping in the night.
Looking up, a black figure was just passing over the rooftop.
"Batman."
Li Ang felt nothing toward him, but maybe because he worked at the Iceberg Lounge, he tensed up and hurried home.
Gotham at night belonged to freaks in tight suits. He wasn't wearing one, and he wasn't a freak.
"Godfather!"
As soon as the door opened, Kara came out of her room.
Children are usually sleepy, but Kara was gifted—she only needed very little sleep to stay energetic.
"Looks like you're better."
Seeing Kara lively again, Li Ang was overjoyed.
Kara cupped her ears with both hands and said, "It went pop and disappeared, but I can still try to hear."
Cough, cough.
Li Ang quickly went over, pulled Kara onto the couch, and hugged her.
"Kara, did you forget our agreement?"
Seeing how nervous Li Ang was, Kara smiled. "Of course not. I won't use my powers lightly."
Kara had already decided she wouldn't casually use her mind-reading ability.
Because after listening for so long, she'd discovered not only that the world was noisy, but that people's hearts were dark.
This was Gotham, after all...
The time Kara had spent listening had nearly made her depressed.
Almost everyone was thinking about how to scheme against the people around them, or planning some kind of 'crime'.
So, after mastering her ability, Kara immediately 'blocked out' all that noise.
Under Li Ang's patient guidance, Kara told him all this.
Li Ang was glad he hadn't let his mind wander back then, or his character persona would've been ruined in front of Kara.
"The human heart hides the corruption of the whole world, so it's best not to try knowing what's inside others."
Li Ang warned Kara.
The ancients said to ask about deeds, not intentions—there was truth in that.
As long as someone was human, they had a dark side inside.
But Li Ang didn't dwell on it; instead, he prepared to lead by example.
His bad habits had mostly faded away, except for what he couldn't help—after all, eating and sex are human nature.
The next day, Kara hurried off to attend Gotham Middle School.
The principal's threat wasn't a joke.
If Li Ang had money, he could've thrown cash around so Kara wouldn't have to show up on time.
But clearly, he didn't.
Li Ang rested at home, not going anywhere.
In the afternoon, Kara came home from school, and Li Ang cooked dinner for her.
Kara tossed her backpack onto a chair and said, "Godfather, there's an outdoor activity at school this weekend. The teacher asked if I wanted to join."
"Why not join?"
Li Ang asked back as he followed a video to make egg fried rice.
He couldn't stir-fry dishes, but he could cook rice.
So after cooking the rice, he deliberately learned to make egg fried rice...
As for stir-frying, that would have to wait.
Kara's body sank into the old sofa as she deliberately played with it, saying, "They're all too childish."
"Don't you have any friends?"
"No, not even common topics to talk about."
Kara said without hesitation.
Compared to someone who'd experienced the Destruction of Krypton and a long journey of Fleeing, even Gotham's peers were indeed too childish.
"Perfect, then. Outdoor activities are meant for making friends. Maybe you'll find common ground."
Li Ang scooped the egg fried rice out of the pan.
He felt Kara was a lot like him.
Back when he was studying in his past life, Li Ang also hated Green Camp and field trips.
But after growing up, he realized that appropriate group activities were still necessary.
"Godfather, I feel like you're trying to get rid of me."
Kara said suspiciously.
"Cough cough."
Li Ang suspected Kara had read his mind again.
But he couldn't show it.
He knew a French girl who'd studied in China; her Chinese was super fluent, and more importantly, she had a sweet face, a head of beautiful black hair that felt familiar to him, and long legs.
Li Ang naturally wanted to find a time when Kara, this 'millstone around his neck', wasn't around to ask her out.
Kara didn't know Li Ang saw her as a millstone, but she was very familiar with that expression.
The precocious Kara said meaningfully, "You really should find me a godmother, or people will actually think you're into kids."
"..."
Li Ang quickly brought the egg fried rice over to shut her up.
