Background / History

Kara was born on Krypton as a member of the House of El. She remembers Krypton and its destruction, unlike her younger cousin Kal-El/Clark Kent, and retains the habits and worldview formed there. Her ship passed through the Phantom Zone, causing her to lose years while not aging and inadvertently allowing Kryptonian prisoners, including General Zod, to escape. 1 6 133

After reaching Earth, Kara was found in her small spaceship by Li Ang in Ohio. A mysterious organization soon pursued her, forcing the pair to flee until they settled in Gotham. Li Ang became her godfather and only family on Earth; after two months in Gotham, she attended Gotham City Middle School. 1 6

Earth's yellow sun gradually awakened her Kryptonian abilities. The uncontrolled sensory overload was initially traumatic: Super Vision exposed skeletons and organs, Super Breath made Gotham's smells unbearable, and Super Hearing kept her awake. Li Ang helped her adapt, taught her English and Chinese, cooked for her, and encouraged her to conceal her powers until she could control them. 1 2 6

During a school trip, Kara saved passengers when their bus fell into a river, exposing herself to classmates and teachers. Their fearful reaction and calling her a “monster” left her isolated. 14

When Black Mask threatened Harley Quinn, Kara first unleashed Heat Vision, killing him and severely damaging a building. Horrified by the death and by her own loss of control, she struggled with guilt, but later trained to use her powers more carefully. 32 33 35 37

Kara learned to fly during training on an uninhabited coast, eventually circling Earth at extraordinary speed. During that flight, she crossed a spatial rift and met Ciri; the two later became part of Li Ang's family alongside Rachel. 37 48

After discovering Clark Kent was her Kryptonian cousin, Kara revealed their origins to him, taught him to fly, and trained him for the expected arrival of General Zod. Jor-El later entrusted Clark's further training to her. Though Kara's technique surpassed Clark's at first, his greater accumulated solar energy eventually let him overpower her. 134 141 142 146

Kara hoped to subdue the arriving Kryptonians rather than kill them, wishing to live among her people and potentially rebuild Krypton. During the conflict, she fought her aunt Astra while holding back due to their family connection. After Zod's defeat, she proposed sending Astra and Faora to help rebuild a disaster-stricken world, allowing Kryptonians to earn support rather than threaten Earth. 170 202 205 208

Several years after the Apokolips invasion, Kara was twenty-one, remained on Earth, and found work at a company after graduating. 328

Appearance

Kara is a blonde, blue-eyed Kryptonian girl whose appearance matures over the course of the story. At thirteen, she was about 1.6 meters tall with baby fat on her face; later, she reached 1.75 meters and was still growing. 1 14 134 276

  • Blonde hair and blue eyes. 1
  • Initially presents as youthful despite her maturity and sorrowful demeanor. 1
  • Wears a Supergirl battle suit bearing the House of El “S” emblem. 72 84
  • Her early suit was handmade with Li Ang's guidance; she later adopted a more durable Kryptonian-made suit from the Fortress of Solitude. 84 141 151
  • Her costume design includes a short skirt, long boots, and cape. 72

Personality

Kara is mature, observant, and bluntly teasing toward Li Ang, but she remains emotionally vulnerable beneath that composure. The destruction of Krypton made her wary, gloomy, and slow to trust; she initially found it difficult to see Earth as home. 1 2 6

She strongly values family and belonging. Li Ang is her only family on Earth for much of the story, while her later connection to Clark and surviving Kryptonians complicates her loyalties. Her wish to spare and relocate Kryptonians stems from both compassion and a desire not to be alone as one of Krypton's last survivors. 6 170 198

Kara is protective by instinct. She saved her classmates despite needing to keep her abilities secret, rescued Gwen Stacy from a fatal fall, rushed to Harley Quinn's aid through their Kryptonian bond, and repeatedly acts to protect people in danger. 14 84 127 150

Her early confidence in her overwhelming power can become carelessness. She is repeatedly described as lacking vigilance and is vulnerable to experienced fighters despite gaining initial advantages. 109 277 306
