Background

Fall of the Ascended

The Vastaya originated among the Ascended who survived the Void War. Most Ascended died in that conflict, while many survivors were contaminated by Void energy and gradually became humanity's enemies 18.

After Azir's interrupted Ascension destroyed Sun City and seemingly ended the royal bloodline, the Ascended lost their central authority. With Aatrox absent, they fought for leadership; the Void corruption within those who had fought in the war worsened whenever their resolve faltered 314.

The conflict devastated Shurima. Cities, oases, and civilizations were destroyed as the Ascended's golden radiance gave way to crimson-black corruption. Mortals came to call the fallen warriors Vastaya 315.

Sealing and Reawakening

Unable to endure the Vastaya War, humanity received powerful sealing methods from divine intervention. Vastaya were imprisoned inside their own weapons, creating living weapons that were later guarded, traded, and fought over for millennia 315 398.

Many Vastaya eventually reawakened after hearing a voice calling on them to resist the gods who had sealed them. The figure known as That Great One helped them locate compatible hosts, restore their consciousness, and recover strength; Ryze was later identified as That Great One 315 486 489.

Appearance

Vastaya appearances vary greatly according to their original Ascended form, their weapon, and the quality of their host. A host may initially look human before revealing a corrupted, animalistic battle form.

  • Their transformed bodies are often dark red or black-red and retain beastlike traits 480 482.
  • A weak host may force a Vastaya to rely on an obvious monstrous form in battle, while a powerful host can preserve a more human appearance 482.
  • Some are visibly bound to sentient weapons, such as Rhaast's scythe and Varus's bow, whose eyes and voices can manifest independently 296 314.
  • Their combat styles frequently reflect animal characteristics inherited from their former Ascended forms 482.

Abilities & Characteristics

Darkness Power

Before their fall, the Ascended wielded Light elemental power. Vastaya instead wield Darkness elemental power, one of the strongest forms of Natural Power.

  • Light and Darkness cannot be conventionally blocked; opponents must evade them 342.
  • Darkness may manifest through weapons, bodily transformations, chains, projectiles, or corrupted magic 342 479.
  • The power and technique of each Vastaya differs according to their original Ascended identity and host.

Possession and Host Integration

Most reawakened Vastaya need hosts to return to the world and restore their former strength.

  • A Vastaya seeks a host with both strength and psychological commonality; compatible personalities make possession and eventual consumption easier 369.
  • Strong hosts allow more of the Vastaya's former power to emerge, while possession of an ordinary person greatly limits its strength 368 482.
  • Control is not always one-sided. Hosts and Vastaya may fight for dominance, coexist, or form a powerful partnership 296 315 499.
  • Some hosts retain enough will to hinder a Vastaya's complete awakening, as Veigar's mental defenses did against the suspected Grian 368.

Living Weapons

A Vastaya's seal is usually tied to its former weapon.

  • The weapon can retain the Vastaya's consciousness for thousands of years 315.
  • Releasing or merging with a host allows the weapon-bound entity to act in the physical world 296 314.
  • The weapons were historically coveted as powerful military assets, spreading sealed Vastaya far beyond Shurima 315.

Limits and Countermeasures

  • Many Vastaya remain partially sealed and cannot immediately exert their full strength; defeating their host can restrain or control them 342.
  • Sivir's Khopesh can restrain Ascended and Vastaya, though it must first strike its target 591.
  • Purification can restore a fallen Ascended in exceptional cases. Varus was purified through Sivir's blood and returned to his Ascended state 501.
  • Vastaya are not uniformly hostile; Varus and Luanna retained enough conscience to reject or oppose the wider faction 316 499.

Major Arcs

  • Early identification — The surviving, Void-corrupted Ascended are identified as the Vastaya, correcting the belief that all Ascended died during the Void War 18.
  • First direct encounter — Kayn and the weapon-bound Rhaast confront Yasuo and Wukong, exposing the hostile relationship between certain Vastaya and their hosts 296.
  • Varus's revelation — Varus explains the Ascended civil war, the origin of their corruption, and the sealing of the Vastaya into living weapons 314 315.
  • Formation of the Light — The Light organization is established to coordinate powerful fighters against the reawakening Vastaya threat 343 501.
  • Runeterra-wide invasion — Vastaya appear simultaneously in Demacia, Ionia, Shurima, Noxus, Piltover, and Freljord, forcing every region to prepare for war 480.
  • Deep Forest crisis — Hostile Vastaya attack the Vastaya Deep Forest, displacing its inhabitants and prompting Yasuo's group to evacuate survivors 508 509.
  • Decisive Battle era — Aatrox leads a full-scale offensive while Ryze's role in releasing the Vastaya becomes known 489 502.

Vastaya of the Deep Forest

The term Vastaya is also used for the animal-human peoples of the Vastaya Deep Forest, described as Vastaya Orcs. Their stated origin differs from the fallen Ascended: humans and animals protected by the Divine Tree gradually merged bloodlines and formed a people combining animal instinct with human thought 562.

  • The Divine Tree, known as Vastaya Xerath, is described as the creator of the dense forest and mediator between humans and beasts 511.
  • Deep Forest peoples include simian, fox, birdman, werewolf, sheep-person, and other animal-derived groups 509 562 565.
  • The Raven Birdman tribe historically guarded Vastaya Xerath and defended the forest from those seeking her power 565.
  • During the invasion, these forest peoples were targeted and displaced by the hostile, fallen-Ascended Vastaya faction 508 509.
