Background / History

Riven was born in Noxus’s northern region. Her parents died during a campaign when she was five, and her grandmother died two years later after placing her in an establishment near the Northern Plains Basin. Its owner gave her the name “Riven,” meaning one whose family had been torn apart by war. By fourteen, she was hungry, frequently beaten, and valued chiefly for her diligence and unusual physical strength. 17

She was taken in by Zhao Xin, whom she regarded as family. After his apparent death during Darius’s failed coup, grief and hatred drove her to seek Tam’s training. Tam’s five teachers trained her relentlessly for over a year; arena combat hardened her into a merciless fighter who left no survivors and earned the name Blood Warrior. 46

Riven joined Darius during the successful overthrow of the Black Rose. She purged Black Rose agents in the Immortal Fortress, personally beheaded the ninth Pale Lady, and accepted a captaincy in the War Axe Legion after finding herself directionless once her revenge was complete. 46 292

After reuniting with Zhao Xin’s successor, Yasuo, Riven accepted responsibility for her actions during Noxus’s Ionian campaign, including the destruction of the Wind Sword Sect and Suma’s death. She abandoned Noxian service to protect Ionia and refused to continue attacking Ionian sects. 47

Riven later travelled extensively with Yasuo, training under Kled, exploring Freljord, Piltover, Bilgewater, and Shurima, and developing her Wind-based techniques.
