Background / History
Konoha Research and Defection
Orochimaru’s parents died long before the main events. He trained under Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, but eventually abandoned those bonds in pursuit of eternity and knowledge 557.
His first human experiments involved transplanting Hashirama Cells into volunteers, with the tacit approval of Hiruzen and Konoha’s leadership. His research initially focused on the physical body; reading the Scroll of Seals in the Forbidden Library later directed him toward souls 3 41.
At the funeral following the Third Shinobi World War in Ninja World calendar year 48, he questioned what Konoha’s costly victory meant. Six years later, he was studying an Ōtsutsuki corpse supplied by Hyuga Yunchuan. To secure Yunchuan’s cooperation, he killed the Hyuga Main Branch elder responsible for the deaths of the boy’s parents 1 2.
Hiruzen discovered his underground laboratory and its human subjects. Orochimaru escaped through the earth, encountered Kakashi, and was grievously wounded by an explosion. Although initially believed dead, he survived and sought escape through Reverse Summoning, reaching Ryūchi Cave 3 4.
Ryūchi Cave and Soul Research
The White Snake Sage recognized that Orochimaru’s fate had been rewritten. His subsequent bargain with Ryūchi Cave cost him his legs and placed Tagorihime within him as an instrument of control. Nevertheless, he completed Living Corpse Reincarnation and continued unlocking the Scroll’s contents 4 61.
The Scroll redirected his research from replacing physical vessels toward gaining strength by consuming souls. His successful experiment also supplied Yunchuan with a practical foundation for further developing Hollows and Zanpakuto 128.
Opening Hueco Mundo
At an ancient underground palace, Orochimaru used a noble-blooded boy and the Gelel Stone’s power to open a passage to Hueco Mundo. He slaughtered the emerging Hollows and fed their souls to Kusanagi, intending to transform the weapon and escape Ryūchi Cave’s hold 190.
White Fang nearly killed him. Orochimaru forced Tagorihime into a gamble: enter the sword and consume its stored souls, or perish with his body. Snake Princess awakened after White Fang cut him in half, allowing him to construct a vast stone serpent and escape rather than continue fighting 191 192.
Moryo and the Land of Demons
Orochimaru joined Obito and Yomi in seeking Moryo. Their aims differed: Yomi wanted to serve the demon, Obito wanted to control it, and Orochimaru intended to have Snake Princess devour its power. Moryo instead granted all three a portion of his strength 229 230.
During the ensuing battle, Orochimaru’s touch mutated the Fourth Raikage’s arm so severely that the Raikage severed it. Orohime’s criticism of his scientific methods enraged him, and Yunchuan’s arrival turned the conflict into a personal confrontation. Yunchuan again cut him through the waist, prompting Orochimaru to call for Obito 241 246 247 248.
Replacing the Kazekage
After devouring Rasa, Orochimaru confronted Sunagakure’s displaced survivors with an army of White Zetsu imitating their comrades. He offered the village continued existence under his control, then used Rasa’s identity to participate in the allied villages’ affairs 307 377 389.
He enlisted Obito’s help in gathering bloodline users and locating Ryūchi Cave. After Orochimaru killed Garaga, the White Snake Sage sealed the cave’s known entrances and severed its outside connections. Orochimaru postponed the assault, anticipating that the coming war would provide better opportunities for plunder 359 431.
Fifth Shinobi World War
Orochimaru’s infiltration culminated in an attack on the Shinobi headquarters with Akatsuki. He deployed the reincarnated Tobirama, who was then controlled by Danzō, and subsequently consumed Hiruko to acquire more bloodline powers 460 465.
He later captured and betrayed Danzō. When confronted, he told the Allied Forces to treat Danzō’s death as a killing performed in genjutsu and made real by the Underground Palace’s Third Layer; the narration states that this was a simplified explanation rather than the full truth 517 528.
Returning to the Gelel ruins with Nagato’s group, Orochimaru helped uncover the sealed Hueco Mundo passage. Naruto and Sasuke emerged with power that shocked him. His attempt to manipulate Naruto’s soul nearly destroyed his own, forcing him to rely on the controlled Madara before merging with the Demonic Statue 538 546.
Yunchuan overpowered the statue and ignored Orochimaru’s accusations about their shared experiments. Orochimaru escalated by consuming the White Snake Sage’s remains and fusing with the Ten-Tails. The resulting transformed body became possessed by the White Snake Sage 548 549 550 554 558.
Revelation and Final Defeat
Orochimaru eventually recognized that Yunchuan had guided his apparent opportunities and disasters from the beginning. Even after Yunchuan offered him a chance to stop, he chose to continue 553.
Yunchuan later explained the full design: he had supplied the Scroll, exposed the laboratory, driven Orochimaru out of Konoha, and repeatedly cornered him into acquiring bloodlines, the White Snake Sage, and the Ten-Tails. Orochimaru’s realization that his proudest decisions had served another person’s experiments caused a mental breakdown 587.
Outside the Underground Palace’s fourth-level entrance, the severely weakened Orochimaru launched a final Mui Transformation attack. Yunchuan turned his own power against him and absorbed both Orochimaru and Snake Princess into a sphere 595.
Appearance
Orochimaru has a pale face, golden slit pupils, a long tongue, and a faint, unsettling smile. His successive modifications make his body increasingly serpentine 229 528.
- Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode: Fine white scales, sharply extending purple eye markings, a forehead horn, and serpentine strands of transparent chakra 190.
- Tagorihime fusion: A thick snake tail terminating in Tagorihime’s female head, which can extend toward his shoulder 190 191.
- Moryo enhancement: A pale Bone Mask bearing an eerie smile 230 240.
- Rasa impersonation: Initially appears with half of Rasa’s face; later wears the Kazekage cloak and maintains the disguise among the allied villages 307 358 377.
- Late transformation: White snake scales and a human-serpent hybrid form carrying a Byakugan and Mangekyō Sharingan 549 554.
Personality
Orochimaru seeks more than survival: he wants to understand, consume, and master everything unknown. His ambition grows from immortality into the pursuit of an Ultimate Lifeform, and discoveries involving souls or Ōtsutsuki remains provoke near-fanatical excitement 129 358 359 557.
He treats people as resources, maintaining allies only while their goals coincide with his own. Guards become stored biological material, Hiruko becomes a source of bloodlines, and Pakura carries hidden Black Threads that defeat her attempted rebellion 229 432 465 553.
His fear of death coexists with an extreme willingness to gamble. He panics when his body begins failing, yet sacrifices portions of his soul to forge Snake Princess and claims that a prearranged resurrection contingency makes death acceptable 4 191.
Yunchuan inspires hatred, intellectual recognition, and envy in him. Orochimaru considers Yunchuan another ruthless visionary, but cannot tolerate the contrast between Yunchuan’s public achievements and his own dependence on concealment and stolen power 247 431 460.
Abilities & Skills
Forbidden-Jutsu and Biological Research
Orochimaru combines decades of biological study with extensive knowledge of forbidden techniques and soul mechanics 128.
- Performs delicate transplantation while maintaining a life-sustaining seal; the procedure demands enough concentration that he cannot simultaneously keep the recipient under genjutsu 1.
- Begins human research with Hashirama Cells transplantation 3.
- Develops Living Corpse Reincarnation before advancing into active soul devouring 61 128.
- Modifies his body using the Chimera Technique and Earth Grudge Fear, integrating Black Threads with Snake Princess’s assimilation ability 550.
Snake Princess — Mui Reincarnation
Snake Princess’s Shikai externalizes Orochimaru’s consciousness as independently controlled nerve bundles. Anything they touch can receive a “soul” and become an extension of his body 192 359.
- Assimilates rock, water, flesh, and souls, controlling them as naturally as his own limbs 359.
- Constructs enormous stone serpents and humanoid giants 192 242 247.
- Reshapes contacted bodies, compresses victims for storage, and can convert them into monsters 229.
- Mutates an opponent’s flesh through a single touch 241.
- After further modifications, channels assimilation through Black Threads 550.
- Limitations: Damage to an assimilated construct can transmit pain back to him. Orohime also criticizes his incomplete understanding of the body as a restriction on the ability’s potential 246.
Soul Devouring and Protection
Orochimaru converts consumed spirit bodies into mental energy, using soul research and Yin Release to sustain the process 128.
- Gains power through direct soul consumption and through Kusanagi’s absorption of Hollow souls 128 190.
- Must withstand resentment, chaotic memories, and negative emotions from a consumed spirit 128.
- Gains strong resistance to ordinary soul attacks through his connection to Snake Princess 546.
- Limitation: The presence inside Naruto overwhelms this protection with a gaze, catastrophically damaging Orochimaru’s soul 546.
Sage Techniques
His early Sage Mode depends on Tagorihime rather than an independent source of Sage power 190.
- Enhances movement and rapidly heals wounds inflicted by weaker Hollows 190.
- Uses Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation to animate and control surrounding rock through Natural Energy 191.
- Creates spikes, cages, and shifting underground structures while concealing himself within chakra-saturated terrain 191.
- Splits into numerous small white snakes and reassembles elsewhere to escape restraint 191.
- Cost: Each use advances the fusion of his soul with Tagorihime’s, serving the White Snake Sage’s plan to make him a loyal pawn 190.
Stolen Bloodlines and Elemental Combat
Orochimaru acquires abilities by consuming their users and incorporates them into a single modified body 431 465.
- Wind and Earth Release: His original strongest elemental specialties; further improved by consuming Rasa 359.
- Swift and Lightning Release: Combine into a surprise attack too fast for Naruto initially to perceive 546.
- Ice, Crystal, and Steel Release: Form a layered barrier against Hollow Flash 546.
- Storm Release: Produces tracking lasers 546.
- Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals: Traps Naruto and creates an opening for soul contact 546.
- Body reshaping: Converts limbs into a spiked hammer or a wind-infused blade 546.
- His final fusion balances Ice, Storm, Explosion, Magnet, Gale, Crystal, Lava, Boil, Scorch, and Wood Release, alongside additional stolen powers 554.
Impure World Reincarnation and Curse Marks
Orochimaru deploys resurrected combatants and uses retained soul fragments as contingencies 191 452 469.
- Sends reincarnated Kinkaku, Ginkaku, and Blue B into battle 469.
- Keeps Madara bound to his control despite Madara’s resentment 546.
- Uses the Demonic Statue’s chakra amplification to override even Hashirama’s resistance and seize reanimated members of the Allied Forces 547.
- Stores severed soul fragments in Curse Marks. Anko is identified as the only successful recipient; Snake Princess’s growth strengthens the fragment within her and changes her mark 452.
- Tagorihime applies a Binding Curse Mark through her bite to briefly restrain White Fang 191.
Demonic Statue and Ten-Tails Assimilation
Orochimaru pilots the Demonic Statue as an extension of himself, then uses it as the basis for further evolution 547 550.
- Performs Steel and Explosion Release through the statue’s body 547.
- Generates hurricanes, thunderclouds, and battlefield-wide lightning 548.
- Reinforces the statue’s hands with Steel and Crystal Release 549.
- Assimilates the Ten-Tails through Mui Reincarnation once all nine Tailed Beasts’ chakra has been assembled 549 550.
- Possession: After the human-serpent transformation, the White Snake Sage controls his body and uses Truth-Seeking Orbs, Wood Release, and Mangekyō-based control against the Allied Forces 554 558.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
