Background

Hatake Sakumo was known as the White Fang of Konoha. After his death, his guilt over abandoning his young son, Hatake Kakashi, prevented his soul from entering the Pure Land. He remained alone in the Gap for over twenty years, waiting to learn whether Kakashi was alive and living well. 130

Hyuga Yunchuan located Sakumo by imitating Kakashi's chakra signature. He exploited Sakumo's guilt by threatening to erase his memories and force him to kill Kakashi, then consumed him in shadow and transformed him into a Hollow. 130

As a Middle-level Menos, Sakumo lost his former identity and emotional memory. His name and connection to Chiyo became meaningless to him, but “Hatake Kakashi” remained carved into his soul alongside his instinct to survive and grow stronger. 141

The being later known as White Fang identifies himself not as Sakumo restored, but as a new existence condensed from countless similar obsessions, with Sakumo's exceptionally powerful obsession serving as the reason he swings his sword. 506

Personality

Before becoming a Hollow, Sakumo is patient enough to endure more than two decades of isolation and sensory deprivation for the chance to see Kakashi again. His guilt and paternal attachment are so profound that threats against Kakashi provoke a fierce reaction even when he is otherwise calm and resigned. 130

As White Fang, he is detached and lethargic on the surface, but turns cold and combative when challenged. He no longer considers himself Hatake Sakumo, though Sakumo's obsession remains the core motive behind his blade. 504 506
