Background / History
Pei Yuemu was born five years before her younger brother, Pei Chixuan. Outwardly, she was regarded as elegant, beautiful, and nearly flawless; privately, Pei Chixuan feared her from childhood and believed she wanted to kill him. Their father, Pei Yongyi, was the only adult who took his fear seriously and disciplined her for it. 203
Although Pei Yuemu never awakened an Ability, she obsessively pursued one. She consumed Crystal Cores in an attempt to awaken and nearly died; a Wood Crystal Core charged with another Ability User’s energy was implanted in her body to continuously sustain and heal her. 139 179
Her resentment toward Pei Chixuan intensified after he received their father’s favor, her Ability Gun was removed from her possession, and she was forced toward a political marriage with Huo Zhuo. Pei Chixuan’s lover, Cen Jiao, was also given one of Pei Yuemu’s kidneys so she could bind an Ability Weapon. 177 178 180
Pei Yuemu approached Qi Xing and Qi Tong with an alliance proposal: they would help remove Pei Yongyi, while she would assist them against Pei Chixuan and prevent Chasing Moon Base from tracking their stolen spatial items. She offered her life-sustaining Wood Crystal Core to Qi Tong as proof of trust, though Qi Xing still bound a vine around her neck as a threat. 177 179 181
During the convoy ambush, Pei Yuemu manipulated Pei Yongyi with a supposed method for awakening Abilities. After Qi Xing’s flower bud incapacitated him, she killed an Earth Ability User, arranged for Qi Xing to decapitate Pei Yongyi to obscure her own involvement, and revealed that her Ability Gun had never actually left her. 218 219
Appearance
Pei Yuemu is a strikingly beautiful woman with a mature, glamorous presence. Her native identity is known for a cold, sharp, and aggressive beauty that reflects her forceful temperament. 139 218
- Beautiful, cold face and deep, sharp eyes. 139 253
- Thick, curly hair. 201
- Mature, charming, and notably stylish; often wears luxurious clothing, black cloaks, or leather boots. 182 218 246
- Her later incarnations include the plain-looking base worker Huang Mu and an elegant, wealthy-looking middle-aged woman. 239 273
Personality
Pei Yuemu is intelligent, calculating, and exceptionally composed under pressure. Even when unarmed, searched, and surrounded by fugitives, she negotiated calmly and treated her own potential death as an acceptable risk. 177
She is vindictive toward perceived slights, especially those involving Pei Chixuan, Cen Jiao, and Pei Yongyi’s favoritism. Her lack of an awakened Ability became a fixation; she envies Ability Users and repeatedly pursues methods to seize or awaken powers regardless of the cost. 139 180 219
As the world’s author, Pei Yuemu often treats its inhabitants as plot devices rather than people. She is willing to alter memories, arrange deaths, replace romantic partners, and end lives to preserve the story she wants. 220 246 254 260
Despite this detachment, she develops an attachment to Qi Tong. Jiang Zhaosu identifies this as a genuine partiality that Pei Yuemu refuses to acknowledge. 274 275
