Background

Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko were Jiraiya’s former students and founders of the original Akatsuki, an organization devoted to mutual understanding and peace. Their movement was destroyed through the scheme of Hanzō and Shimura Danzō; Yahiko died by Nagato’s hand, and Nagato awakened the Rinnegan in grief and summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The statue’s Black Rods remained embedded in his back, leaving his body severely weakened for years. 68 76

Using Yahiko’s corpse as the Deva Path, Nagato became “Pain” and led Akatsuki’s campaign to gather the Tailed Beasts. He believed that forcing the world to experience overwhelming pain would deter war and establish peace. 15

Akatsuki initially sought to recruit or kill Hyuga Chiba for his Tenseigan. Chiba instead overwhelmed the Six Paths of Pain, exposed that Nagato’s Rinnegan had been implanted by Madara, and used Yahiko’s body as leverage to force Nagato’s cooperation. 63 67

Chiba subsequently located Nagato’s true body, restored his health, removed the Black Rods connecting him to the Demonic Statue, erased Madara’s control seal, and gave him a Flying Thunder God mark for protection against Obito and Zetsu. Nagato agreed to follow Chiba so long as the Land of Rain and the Ninja World were not destroyed. 68 69

After Chiba later enhanced Nagato’s compatibility with the Rinnegan, Nagato gained access to powers previously beyond him. He and Chiba then conducted a controlled battle to determine their new limits; although Nagato fought with Limbo clones and Complete Body Susanoo, Chiba’s normal state ultimately surpassed him. 97 102

Nagato’s true body was once emaciated and near death: he had short white hair, ruined legs, and numerous Black Rods embedded in his back. Chiba’s restoration returned his red hair, physical strength, and natural vitality. 68 69

Personality

Nagato is resolute, ideological, and initially convinced that only fear and suffering can end the cycle of war. As Pain, he presents himself as a god whose authority is absolute, treating obstacles to Akatsuki’s plan as enemies to be eliminated. 15

Yahiko remains his greatest emotional vulnerability. Chiba’s threat to convert Yahiko’s corpse into a puppet succeeds precisely because Nagato cannot bear to lose the Deva Path. 67

After learning the origin of his Rinnegan and recovering his health, Nagato becomes more cautious and pragmatic. He remains concerned about Chiba’s capacity for tyranny, but his gratitude, dependence, and belief that Chiba may protect the Land of Rain lead him to pledge loyalty. 69 97 103
