Pandora was an undeveloped, unexplored planet in the Oasis world, one that had been added and fictionalized but still had no teleportation stations open to players. Its real scientific name should have been Alpha Centauri Bb-4. It was a beautiful planet in the Alpha Centauri system, also known as Rigil Kentaurus, and was roughly the same size and shape as Earth.

However, surprisingly, Pandora wasn't actually a planet at all. It was merely a moon of a giant gas planet called Polyphemus. The Alpha Centauri system had three stars—Alpha Centauri A, B, and C—and Polyphemus and its moons all orbited Alpha Centauri A.

Many years ago, the RDA Corporation had traveled countless miles, spending years on the journey, to reach Pandora and establish a mining base there. Their purpose was to extract a mineral found nowhere else: the superconducting ore "Unobtanium," a rare mineral that could sell for more than twenty million per kilogram—more valuable than gold!

But...

For some unknown reason, the RDA Corporation discovered that its highly important and profitable mining base on Pandora had completely lost contact with Earth headquarters after an attack.

So, to find out the truth and learn what had happened on Pandora—and to send someone ahead to scout the planet before the expeditionary force, which might take years to prepare, could set out—they needed someone to "brave the danger" and go to Pandora to investigate!

That was one of the important reasons behind the mission scroll in Annie's hands. Even though she had gotten it as a drop, that still made her a researcher sent to Pandora by the RDA Corporation—and a perfectly legitimate one at that.
