Bird Island, also known as the Kingdom of Torino, was a mysterious island. It was said to be home to a group of strange, primitive natives, who lived alongside a species of intelligent giant birds from elsewhere.

Its defining feature was obvious. You could see it from a great distance.

At the center of the island stood an enormous tree, towering thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of meters into the sky. Its trunk was terrifyingly thick—nearly half as wide as the island—and its roots covered half the island's center.

No one knew how it had grown. It simply stood there.

For generations, the humans on the island had lived peaceful lives on the ground beneath the tree. The giant birds who had arrived more recently had claimed the tree and built their nests high among its branches. As for the relationship between the two groups, outsiders didn't know.

The island was almost completely cut off from the rest of the world. It had no sailing ships and lay nowhere near any major sea route, so few people even knew it existed.

But today, on a calm and windless day at sea, a sail appeared in the distance.

What was astonishing was that, despite the lack of wind, its sails were somehow billowing fully as it raced toward the island with its incredible tree at an unbelievable speed.
