That morning, dozens of Gryffindor and Slytherin students were having Defense Against the Dark Arts together in a classroom. A copy of Dark Magic: A Guide to Self-Defense sat on every desk, and Professor Quirrell was holding forth at the front of the room.
Professor Quirrell did look rather strange, and he gave off a foul, unpleasant smell, but no one could deny that his lessons were excellent!
He knew all about the questions concerning Dark Magic that many books failed to explain clearly, and he explained everything in detail. Whenever a student asked a question, he answered fully, as if he were afraid the students might not understand Dark Magic well enough.
So there was no question about it: even though Professor Quirrell himself wasn't very popular, his Defense Against the Dark Arts lessons kept even poor students like Ron, who often daydreamed in class, utterly engrossed. Even Harry, who was frequently called out for criticism, had earned praise and house points for once.
"All right, all right."
"That's about all for today, and we're nearly out of time."
"But before class ends, I'd like to ask a few questions. They're still about defending against Dark Magic, of course."

"Annie Hastur, would you stand up, please?"
Seeing that there were fewer than ten minutes left before class ended and that they had nearly finished the material in the book, Professor Quirrell closed it and, to the students' lingering disappointment, began calling on people for a change.
More importantly, his target was a certain troublesome little girl who had spent the entire lesson slumped over her book, staring blankly and dozing off.
