Long ago, when the Great Sage journeyed west to fetch the scriptures, he passed through Flaming Mountain and wanted to borrow the Banana Leaf Fan. But Bull Demon King and Princess Iron Fan refused no matter what, so the two sides fought. In the end, the battle drew countless immortals and gods, and the mighty Bull Demon King was defeated. After his defeat, he converted to Buddhism.
Of course, saying he converted may not be entirely accurate. Perhaps, strictly speaking, he was imprisoned—or kept under house arrest?
In any case!
Before a hundred years had passed, he announced to the world that his cultivation was complete, and so he was allowed to return to Flaming Mountain.
Bull Demon King's wife, Princess Iron Fan, and his daughter Pingping were overjoyed. They held a lavish feast to celebrate his return and welcome him home.
At the feast, the Land God of Flaming Mountain once asked why he had returned so soon. Bull Demon King only replied that an old friend, with whom he had once had a misunderstanding, had helped him earn merit. Then the Bodhisattva had asked the Buddha to grant him a favor and let him return.
Bull Demon King also said that from then on, he would stay by the side of his wife and daughter and go nowhere else.
And that was exactly what he did!
From that day on, Bull Demon King's temperament changed completely. His former bold, freewheeling nature was never seen again.
He turned down every invitation to a feast, stopped traveling the land, and no longer called on his friends. Instead, he stayed in Flaming Mountain day and night, helping his wife, Princess Iron Fan, manage the household and drill the ox soldiers under his command. His days
