It wasn't until the following afternoon that Frieren and Fern finished packing. After checking out, they set off on their journey again.
The reason they didn't leave until the afternoon was obvious: after returning the night before, they'd both gotten so absorbed in their books that they stayed up very late. As a result, both of them—including Fern—had accidentally slept until noon.
And after getting up at noon, washing up, eating, and packing their luggage, it was naturally already afternoon.
