Background and History
Sea monsters occupy waters and islands beyond the Nine Provinces’ defended coastline. The Zhongshan Archipelago serves as an early line of defense against those arriving from the Pacific; only its largest island allows humans to move about with relative freedom 158.
According to the Vermilion Bird, Jiang Gu’s malevolent thoughts corrupted its remains in the deep sea, polluting the water and giving rise to the first deep-sea evil beasts. These creatures multiplied into the Sea God Clan, and many sea monsters carry their bloodline. The clan seeks Jiang Gu’s remains to increase its strength and produce more evil beasts 481.
Sea monster attacks later expand into a full-scale coastal invasion. Southern cities, including Modu and Xiamen, are heavily affected, while monsters entering the Yangtze River threaten cities farther inland 547. During the battle for Modu, Bai Mo and his allies defeat the Cold Moon Eye Demon God and rout its forces; Bai Mo then uses the Eye of Tides to make the sea recede 573 574.
Species and Organization
| Group | Documented traits |
|---|---|
| Sea Monkey Monsters | Low-tier demons that serve stronger species; used as scouts and driven ahead of Siren forces 224 457 461. |
| Shrimp Dragons | Patrol behind Sea Monkey Monsters and can detect faint spatial fluctuations 457. |
| Sirens | Pack-associated sea demons. At Leizhou, they patrol in twelve-member squads led by commanders; hundreds also drive Sea Monkey Monsters into battle 233 461 463. |
| Sea worms | A major force in the Lingjiang sea area. Known types include Poison Barb, Red Horn, Jade Pattern, and Gray Scale Sea Worms 252. |
| High-ranking leaders | The Leizhou forces include monarchs such as the Mermaid Queen and Red Ridge Thunder Dragon. At Modu, Emperor-level sea monsters and their armies pose a wider threat 457 568. |
The Leizhou sea monsters maintain layered defenses around the Thunder Element Holy Land: Sea Monkey scouts, Shrimp Dragon patrols, and a wall of mutated Sea Thorns. Farther inside, Siren squads guard a deep pit whose entrance is watched by the Mermaid Queen 457 463.
Abilities and Tactics
Aquatic Combat
- Sea demons can be substantially stronger in the ocean than on land; Chiling Demons can unleash demonic skills several times more powerful there 224.
- Some species manipulate seawater directly. Sirens summon a black tide to carry troops into human formations, while the Four-Colored Octopus Monarch raises an icy tsunami and forms water-based defenses 382 461.
- Gray Scale Sea Worms have light-refracting scales that make them nearly invisible underwater, allowing concealed attacks 252.
Coordinated Assaults
- Sea monster forces use scouts, patrols, guarded territory, and massed attacks rather than relying solely on individual strength 457 461 463.
- In Modu, monsters attack from the coast and the Huangpu and Yangtze Rivers. The White Demon Disaster Cloud advances as a drifting mass of Salamander and Shell Demons 570.
- Powerful sea monsters can cause city-scale destruction: a giant tentacled creature demolishes Sea War City and its defensive formations during a renewed tide 560.
