Background / History
Ten years before Su Mo’s entrance assessment, Zhao Wuji offended Spirit Hall and escaped an encirclement of sixteen Soul Emperors despite being a Soul Emperor himself. He subsequently vanished from public view. Ning Rongrong recognizes his title during the assessment and is surprised to discover him teaching at Shrek Academy 45.
By the time the five applicants arrive, Zhao Wuji serves as Shrek’s vice dean. With the dean absent, he claims authority over the assessment and decides to test the newcomers personally 44 45.
Appearance
- Apparent age: Around fifty 44.
- Face: Ordinary features 44.
- Build: Shorter than Tang San, but exceptionally broad-shouldered and bear-like 44.
- Hands: Enormous, likened to palm-leaf fans 47 50.
Personality
Zhao Wuji enjoys fighting and is eager to stretch his muscles against promising applicants. He is proud of his strength, sensitive to humiliation, and quick to anger when Su Mo repeatedly tricks him. His insistence on combat leads him to forbid flying only after Su Mo demonstrates that it could bypass the survival test, while claiming the restriction was already part of the rules 44 45 46 47.
His bravado gives way to deference when he believes he faces an overwhelmingly stronger opponent. Convinced that Su Mo is a Titled Douluo, he bows, apologizes, and accepts punishment rather than resisting 46.
Despite his temper, he recognizes responsibilities attached to teaching. After Dai Mubai interrupts his assault on Tang San, Zhao Wuji feels guilty, requests treatment, and is relieved when the boy recovers. Later, he reminds himself that his position makes his former lethal responses unacceptable, though he still plans harsh training for the students who embarrassed him 48 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Great Strength Vajra Bear
Zhao Wuji’s martial soul gives him formidable strength and defense. Dai Mubai describes his overall combat ability as second only to Shrek’s dean 45.
- Defense: Tang San’s ordinary Blue Silver Whip initially feels pleasant rather than painful 48.
- Strength: Even his restrained slaps badly swell Tang San’s face; the narration states that a full-strength slap could sever his head 48.
- Speed: His relative weakness, but his rank advantage still makes him faster than the rank-twenty-nine applicants 45.
- Martial Soul Possession: Activated before confronting the black-robed Tang Hao 50.
Soul Skills
| Skill | Ring / Age Class | Demonstrated Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Immovable Bright King Body | First / Hundred-year | Reflects attacks within three meters. Rebounds Tang San’s Blue Silver Thorn Whip onto its wielder 48. |
| Great Strength Vajra Palm | Second / Hundred-year | A powerful palm attack. Used with Position Tracking to strike Tang San’s chest, sending him flying and rendering him unconscious 48. |
| Gravity Enhancement | Third / Thousand-year | Used alongside Gravity Compression to subject opponents to crushing pressure and impede movement 47 48. |
| Position Tracking | Fourth / Thousand-year | Marks a target with a soul ring and allows Zhao Wuji to close the distance instantly within one hundred meters. Tang San cannot evade his subsequent attack by changing position 48. |
| Gravity Compression | Fifth / Ten-thousand-year | Combined with Gravity Enhancement to force Tang San toward his knees and restrict his evasive footwork 48. |
Soul Saint Aura
- Releases his full aura when angered by Su Mo’s deception, making the nearby applicants struggle to breathe 46.
- Later directs his Soul Saint pressure at Su Mo in an attempt to force him to his knees 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shrek Academy Entrance Assessment
Zhao Wuji gives Su Mo, Tang San, Xiao Wu, Ning Rongrong, and Zhu Zhuqing one incense stick’s time to coordinate, followed by a survival test of the same duration. The entire group passes if even one applicant remains. Su Mo exposes a loophole by flying beyond his reach, prompting Zhao Wuji to prohibit flight and insist on a fight 44 45.
Su Mo then displays nine simulated soul rings, including three apparently hundred-thousand-year rings, and poses as a Titled Douluo. Zhao Wuji initially submits, realizes the bluff from the students’ reactions, and becomes furious. When Su Mo transforms the academy grounds into a vast forest, Zhao Wuji again accepts his supposed superiority and agrees to stand still as punishment 46.
The forest disappears after half an incense stick because Su Mo exhausts his soul power. Zhao Wuji attacks with his gravity skills, but Xiao Wu teleports Su Mo to safety. Unable to catch him immediately, Zhao Wuji threatens to vent his anger on the remaining applicants, and Tang San steps forward to fight 47.
Tang San’s Defeat and the Test’s Outcome
Zhao Wuji initially enjoys Tang San’s ordinary whip attacks, then immobilizes and repeatedly slaps him. The Blue Silver Thorn Whip causes genuine pain, forcing Zhao Wuji to activate his attack-reflecting defense 48.
As Tang San prepares to use hidden weapons, Su Mo secretly amplifies Zhao Wuji’s wariness and anger through Emotion Control. Zhao Wuji combines Position Tracking with Great Strength Vajra Palm and knocks Tang San unconscious. Dai Mubai’s plea stops him, and he sends for Oscar to treat the boy 48.
Meanwhile, Zhu Zhuqing retrieves the incense and Ning Rongrong blows on it to accelerate its burning. Zhao Wuji accepts that the time has expired and passes the group, choosing not to pursue an additional test partly because of Ning Rongrong’s connection to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 48.
Nighttime Confrontation with Tang Hao
After the assessment, Zhao Wuji privately admires Su Mo’s unusual abilities, Tang San’s soul skills, and Xiao Wu’s rare teleportation, but plans to put them through demanding training. Su Mo overhears these plans through Spiritual Detection and lures him outside with an eerie voice 50.
Tang Hao appears in black robes and releases nine soul rings. Su Mo remotely suppresses Zhao Wuji’s fear and strengthens his suspicion that this is another disguise. Zhao Wuji attacks, only to be kicked through two trees and left coughing blood 50.
Flender’s arrival briefly reassures him, but the dean respectfully addresses Tang Hao as Haotian Douluo. Zhao Wuji then connects Tang Hao’s surname with Tang San and realizes that beating the student has angered the Clear Sky Douluo 50.
Relationships
- Su Mo — Applicant turned student who repeatedly humiliates him through flight, simulated soul rings, and Wood Release. Su Mo also secretly manipulates his emotions during both major confrontations 44 46 48 50.
- Tang San — Applicant who bears the brunt of his anger during the assessment. Zhao Wuji injures him severely, then feels guilty and arranges treatment 47 48.
- Dai Mubai — Student who introduces the applicants and explains Zhao Wuji’s abilities. His intervention stops the assault on Tang San 44 45 48.
- Xiao Wu — Applicant whose teasing irritates him and whose teleportation enables Su Mo’s escape. He later recognizes her spatial skill as exceptionally rare 44 47 50.
- Flender — Shrek’s dean and Zhao Wuji’s superior, whom he calls “Boss.” Flender identifies Tang Hao during the nighttime confrontation 45 50.
- Tang Hao — Tang San’s father and the Clear Sky Douluo. Zhao Wuji mistakes him for Su Mo under emotional manipulation and is immediately overpowered 50.
