Background / History

Demon King Identity and Defeat

Piccolo initially appears as Demon Jr., a solitary warrior meditating above the clouds in weighted clothing. At the tournament, he mocks Krillin over Tambourine’s earlier killing of him and approaches their match with open contempt. At this stage, Piccolo and Kami’s lives are linked: killing Piccolo would also kill Kami and permanently disable Earth’s Dragon Balls 14 27.

His attempt to destroy Papaya Island with the Super Explosive Demon Wave fails when Krillin disperses it with a thirty-percent modified Ordinary Punch. The defeat leaves Piccolo alive but humiliated. Five years later, he is still training obsessively and struggling with the apparently unbridgeable gap between them 28 59.

Saiyan Crisis and Teaching

Raditz’s arrival forces Piccolo and Goku to cooperate despite their rivalry. Piccolo’s charged Special Beam Cannon wounds Raditz, but its lengthy preparation and the recovery period afterward leave him exposed to retaliation 62 63.

Krillin later entrusts Gohan and Trunks to him. Piccolo begins with wilderness survival, abandoning the children with instructions to endure for six months. His subsequent instruction emphasizes reactions, discipline, and the danger of relying on tricks against stronger enemies 68 71.

Gohan’s trust gradually changes him. Piccolo later recalls the child offering him an apple and clinging to him during a storm as experiences that broke through his deliberate coldness and taught him the meaning of a bond 392.

Namek and Reunion with Kami

On Namek, hearing his people being slaughtered drives Piccolo into a rage. He follows Krillin’s plan to locate survivors and move them to safety rather than charging blindly into battle 92.

Piccolo and Nail choose fusion to protect their people. He initially dominates Frieza and holds him off while his companions pursue their plans, but Frieza’s later transformations overturn that advantage. Goku rescues him from a barrage of beams, and Krillin treats his injuries with the Divine Oracle Technique 108 109 110 115 116.

His approach to Frieza remains pragmatic: he tries to kill him before his final transformation finishes and angrily objects when Goku redirects the attack in pursuit of a fair fight 118.

Facing another growing threat, Piccolo proposes reuniting with Kami. Their initial concern over losing Earth’s Dragon Balls is resolved when Krillin recruits Dende as the new Kami. After the fusion, the unified Namekian declares himself neither Kami nor Piccolo, although he continues to be addressed as Piccolo 136 137.

Cell and the Search for Another Path

Kami’s knowledge encourages Piccolo to pursue rules and technique rather than raw power alone. His spatial abilities let him surprise Cell in Jingge Town, but their stamina cost creates an opening for Cell to catch his ankle and drain his energy 172 192.

Mutaito later teaches him to improve the Special Beam Cannon through extreme energy compression. Against Purple Cell, Piccolo times a True Special Beam Cannon to strike the location of Cell’s core after the loss of his tail disrupts his balance. He also helps coordinate the group’s later assault by cutting off Cell’s escape routes 221 237 242.

By the Majin Buu crisis, Piccolo has fallen too far behind to participate effectively. The emergence of multiple Super Saiyan 4 fighters—including Gohan—deepens his frustration. Krillin and Aki then confront him with a vision of his ancestors’ destruction and flight from the Demon Realm 335 336.

Dragon Clan Heritage and Awakening

In the Demon Realm, Piccolo’s ancestral homeland provokes a powerful physical response. His battle with Ball God No. 2 pushes him to the brink of death, but also loosens the barrier around his potential. Dende and Krillin jointly heal his injuries afterward 351 354 355 358.

Neba reveals that “Namekian” and “demon” are survival-era identities: their true ancestry is the Dragon Clan, a sacred race granted miracle-making power by the Dragon God. Piccolo also discloses that the Grand Elder had previously found his soul incomplete, explaining why unlocking his potential had accomplished little 360 362.

Aki repairs that damage, but Piccolo’s next battle exposes another weakness. Regenerating an arm against Sphere God No. 1 draws corrosive Demon Realm energy into his body, exhausting him as he struggles to suppress it. He subsequently subdues and absorbs that same energy, then undergoes the painful Third Eye fusion and his later Dragon God awakening 366 391 393 394 395 398 399.

Earth’s Dragon God Guardian

Piccolo uses his new authority to help resolve the Dragon Balls’ Negative Energy crisis. He extracts Six-Star Dragon’s destructive energy while Krillin protects her soul, allowing her to survive as an independent life. After the evil dragons are defeated, he reshapes Earth’s Dragon Balls while Krillin handles their laws, producing an upgraded golden Shenron 421 467.

He chooses to remain on Earth rather than join further special training. His reasons are practical: the departing warriors would leave a gap in Earth’s defenses, the children need supervision, and he still has an enormous Dragon God legacy to study 471.

Later, he assists Krillin’s timeline expedition and summons Super Shenron. His greatest documented exertion comes when he calls Earth Shenron, Porunga, Demon Realm Dark Shenron, and Super Shenron together and orders them to transfer their Dragon God Laws power to Krillin. The effort burns through his bloodline and leaves him suffering karmic backlash beyond ordinary regeneration or Dende’s healing 583 588 604 607.

Personality

Piccolo begins as haughty, intimidating, and deliberately cruel in his taunts. His pride survives repeated defeats, but also makes his inability to keep pace with Krillin and the Saiyans deeply painful. He responds through punishing training, meditation, and increasingly unconventional routes to power 27 59 170 335.

His severity as a teacher conceals growing affection. He criticizes Gohan and Trunks without softening his language, yet Gohan’s reliance on him becomes central to his emotional development. Learning of Gohan’s death in another timeline provokes particular fury toward the Androids, and he offers Future Trunks reassurance through stern encouragement rather than sentimental speeches 71 149 151 392.

Fusion with Kami makes his mind more balanced and gives him a stronger appreciation for peaceful everyday life. He remains blunt and easily irritated by teasing, but eventually chooses guardianship and childcare over another opportunity for special training.
