Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Trained base — Battle Power 515 | 71 | Piccolo’s training develops a solid foundation. His emotionally triggered burst power remains unreadable, and Krillin’s scan identifies him as a reactive counterattacker. |
| Potential unlocked — Battle Power 200,000 | 106 | The Grand Elder awakens his latent power on Namek. This is his base strength and can rise further with emotional fluctuations. |
| Early-stage Super Saiyan | 136 | Recorded at 12 million in base and 600 million as a Super Saiyan. Krillin’s scan warns that anger could push him beyond Goku and Vegeta. |
| Full-Power Super Saiyan training | 172 | Goku teaches him to maintain the transformation during ordinary activities, reducing emotional agitation and the energy spent sustaining it. Completion is not confirmed in this passage. |
| Proto–Super Saiyan 3 | 247 | Following Krillin’s apparent sacrifice, divine silver-white and savage crimson forces erupt together. Gohan develops waist-length golden hair and crimson eyes. |
| Full-potential release against Cell | 252 | Krillin’s encouragement steadies him, allowing his silver-red beam to overwhelm Cell’s final attack. The decisive blast also receives Krillin’s concealed causality-based assistance. |
| Nascent Beast power | 279 | Demonstrates a black-haired state with a white aura and crimson lightning after experimenting with the “wildness” Krillin described. |
| Mystic Realm — documented by this point | 300 321 | An evolutionary branch awakened by the Old King of Gods. Unlike Goku and Vegeta’s contemporary transformations, it completely conceals Gohan’s power. |
| Great Ape transformation | 321 | Saiyan instincts, Mystic Realm power, and his nascent Beast form clash inside his Great Ape body, causing its gold and silver coloring to fluctuate. |
| Beast Super Saiyan 4 | 321 322 | Forces the three powers into one form. Gohan overpowers Kid Buu and slows his regeneration, but must consciously restrain the forces still fighting within him. |
| Fully unlocked Beast Super Saiyan Form | 386 | Releases his form completely against Goma, producing silver-white fur, contrasting crimson eyes, and silver and black-red lightning capable of scorching tiny holes in space. |
| Late-stage Super Saiyan 4 | 437 | Rage at Syn Shenron’s contempt for innocent lives catalyzes a fusion of Beast savagery and Mystic rationality. His eyes turn silver, and pure silver lightning replaces the mixed arcs. |
| Beast Form — 10-dimensional battle power | 533 534 | During his fight with Broly, his will to protect finally unites Saiyan instinct, Mystic divinity, and the Beast Factor. The system identifies this as his unique evolutionary endpoint, outside the Super Saiyan lineage. |
Appearance
- Childhood: Introduced with a bowl cut and a neat suit, often hiding behind Goku. He later wears a red hat carrying the Four-Star Dragon Ball and possesses a Saiyan tail 54 59.
- Scholarly appearance: Usually wears thick glasses at seventeen. He removes and carefully stores them before transforming for Bardock 279 515.
- Martial arts clothing: Wears an orange Turtle School gi at the tournament, with a green Saiyaman suit concealed underneath 283.
- Beast Super Saiyan 4: Has short silver-white body fur, an ash-gray tail, and silver and black-red lightning. His hair is depicted as silver-white in some appearances and long black in others 386 437 515 532.
- Ultimate Beast Form: His hair turns silver-white and sweeps upward and back, his eyes become red, and a silver-red aura distorts the surrounding air 534.
Personality
Gohan begins as a timid, obedient child who avoids unfamiliar people and repeats Chi-Chi’s teaching that fighting is wrong. Even after developing considerable strength, he remains deferential to his mother and embarrassed by attention 54 59 225 283.
His gentleness does not prevent him from fighting to protect others. On Namek, he seeks power for everyone’s safety rather than for combat itself. He later rejects Zamasu’s claim to divine authority and refuses to accept Syn Shenron’s argument that weak people deserve to die 106 231 436.
Gohan’s central struggle is not simply becoming stronger, but remaining himself while using that strength. He remembers nearly losing his reason against Golden Cell and retreats into books and laboratories partly to suppress his destructive impulses. His ultimate breakthrough comes when he recognizes protection—not uncontrolled anger—as the true source of his power 529 533.
His appetite for challenging battles nevertheless grows. He enjoys testing himself against Trunks and, after mastering Beast Super Saiyan, complains that Goma was too weak. Against Broly, however, he prioritizes helping his opponent learn control over securing an immediate victory 284 388 533.
Abilities & Skills
Hybrid Potential and Emotional Power
Gohan’s latent potential is repeatedly identified as extraordinary, with Krillin judging that it may exceed Goku’s 55.
- Emotional amplification: His battle power rises with emotional fluctuations; even early scans cannot measure his burst ceiling 71 106 136.
- Protective breakthroughs: Threats to loved ones and innocent lives trigger major releases of power, including his victories over Cell and his breakthrough against Syn Shenron 252 436 437.
- Control requirement: Fear and despair can obstruct his response despite intense anger, as shown when Cell overwhelms his family and friends 245.
- Limit of near-death growth: By the Evil Dragon campaign, Gohan states that his body has been developed far enough that recovery from near death no longer increases his strength 446.
Martial Arts
Gohan combines formal instruction with Saiyan combat instincts 438.
- Piccolo’s school: Learns fighting stances, combat reactions, and the Special Beam Cannon under Piccolo 71 113.
- Fundamental movement: Uses basic movement techniques taught by Master Roshi to pass through concentrated shellfire without transforming 384.
- Ki control: Applies Master Mutaito’s teachings alongside bestial instincts, targeting joints, blind spots, and gaps in an opponent’s defenses 438.
- Close combat: Uses punches, kicks, elbows, charges, and feints. His tournament clash with Trunks briefly cracks space 284 437.
- Burst Rush: Employs a technique identified as unique to his Beast Super Saiyan 4 form against Syn Shenron 435.
Ki Techniques
- Flight and sensing: Flies between battlefields and distinguishes his allies’ ki signatures across distant regions 435.
- Kamehameha: Vaporizes Super Buu’s exposed body and later contests Syn Shenron’s planet-destroying energy sphere with a silver-white beam 303 437.
- Special Beam Cannon: Uses Piccolo’s technique against Vegeta and Syn Shenron. Its effectiveness remains dependent on the opponent’s defenses; against the strengthened Syn Shenron, it leaves only a mark on his horn 113 441.
- Lightning-infused strikes: Sends silver and black-red lightning through Kid Buu, splitting his body and slowing his regeneration 322.
- Final attack against Cell: Releases a silver-red Kamehameha that consumes Cell’s black beam and destroys him, with support from Krillin 252 533.
Beast Evolution
Gohan’s personal path combines three distinct sources: Saiyan primal instincts, the Old King of Gods’ Mystic Realm, and his own Beast Factor 321 533.
- Initial forced unity: Beast Super Saiyan 4 contains all three powers, but they continue resisting one another. Gohan’s consciousness holds them in check 322.
- Sustained combat: The form provides enormous stamina, though hostile effects and physical punishment can still exhaust or injure him 440 441 533.
- Protective alignment: His final evolution gives the three forces a shared purpose—destroying threats to those he cherishes 533.
- Independent endpoint: The resulting Beast Form is explicitly classified outside the Super Saiyan transformation lineage 534.
History
Childhood and Wilderness Training
Gohan first meets Trunks while visiting Krillin’s household with Goku and Chi-Chi. Their contrasting upbringings immediately cause friction: Trunks challenges him to fight, while Gohan insists that children should behave politely. Seeing Gohan’s untapped potential, Krillin resolves to prevent his talent from being wasted 54 55.
Raditz later seizes Gohan and attempts to use him to coerce Goku into killing humans. Trunks confronts Raditz and demands his release. Afterward, Krillin entrusts both children to Piccolo, who leaves them in the Dinosaur Plains with instructions to survive for six months 60 68.
Gohan initially cries for his parents and relies on Trunks to confront the dangers around them. By the next documented training assessment, he can fight in the air and exchange ki attacks, although Piccolo still criticizes his reactions and Krillin notes his reluctance to initiate combat 68 71.
Namek and the Fight Against Cell
Gohan joins Goku, Piccolo, Trunks, Krillin, and Bulma aboard the Hope for the journey to Namek. Krillin secures Chi-Chi’s permission by presenting the trip as a “Cosmic Summer Camp,” while she sends Gohan away with an enormous collection of textbooks 89.
On Namek, the Grand Elder unlocks his potential. His growing confidence is apparent when he and Trunks later stop Vegeta from destroying Kami’s Lookout, leaving the Saiyan prince bloodied and kneeling 106 113.
During the confrontation with the enhanced Cell, Gohan suffers broken legs, and Goku is critically injured while shielding him. Krillin then places himself between Gohan and Cell, apparently sacrificing himself while urging Gohan to stop yielding to evil. The incident draws out Gohan’s Proto–Super Saiyan 3 power 240 246 247.
In the final beam struggle, Krillin projects himself from subspace and reminds Gohan of those he is protecting. Gohan destroys Cell, collapses from exhaustion, and is caught by Krillin—revealed to be alive and unharmed 252.
Tournament and Majin Buu
At seventeen, Gohan demonstrates the beginnings of his Beast power before entering the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. His match with Trunks ends in a draw after both agree to forfeit, having briefly torn cracks in space during their clash 279 284.
Against Super Buu, Gohan vaporizes the visible body with a Kamehameha but relaxes too soon. A fragment hidden underground envelops and absorbs him, producing Buuhan 303 304.
Later in the Buu conflict, Gohan’s Great Ape instincts collide with his Mystic Realm and nascent Beast power. Their forced unification creates Beast Super Saiyan 4, which allows him to dominate Kid Buu and interfere with his regeneration 321 322.
Demon Realm and Evil Dragons
Gohan fully unleashes Beast Super Saiyan against Goma, cutting apart Dark Energy Balls and smashing through the boulders hurled by Goma’s Third Eye. After the encounter, he eagerly accepts Krillin’s promise of a more demanding opponent 386 388.
During the Evil Dragon campaign, Gohan discovers a coastal city destroyed by Syn Shenron’s awakening. He fights despite Krillin’s warning and is initially overwhelmed. Syn Shenron’s dismissal of innocent lives provokes a late-stage Super Saiyan 4 breakthrough, allowing Gohan to force him onto the defensive 435 436 437.
The balance changes again when Syn Shenron absorbs the Three-Star Dragon Ball and combines ice laws with negative energy. Gohan becomes badly injured and exhausted. Goku gives him a Senzu Bean, and Gohan later joins Vegeta in protecting Goku while he assimilates the Four-Star Dragon Ball’s power 441 446 449.
Bardock and the Ultimate Beast Form
Gohan encourages Goku to meet Bardock, then respectfully introduces himself as Bardock’s grandson. At Krillin’s urging, he demonstrates Beast Super Saiyan 4, showing that his scholarly demeanor conceals a transformation distinct from Goku’s and Vegeta’s 510 512 515.
On Planet Vampa, Krillin chooses Gohan to help Broly release and control his suppressed power. Gohan understands Broly’s fear of harming others because of his own experiences with destructive rage 529.
Broly’s accelerating growth eventually overwhelms him. Rather than abandon his aim of guiding Broly, Gohan searches inward and recognizes his resolve to protect as the common purpose of his three powers. Their complete union awakens his ultimate Beast Form, assessed at ten-dimensional battle power. He then sends Broly flying with a basic straight punch 533 534.
Future Counterpart
A separate Future Gohan returns from death in a restored West City after years of fighting the Androids. Scarred and missing an arm, he initially struggles to believe that Goku and his fallen friends are alive. He breaks down when Future Goku embraces him and apologizes for leaving him to endure so much alone 156.
Krillin subsequently restores Future Gohan’s missing left hand with the Divine Oracle Technique. Gohan attempts to kneel in gratitude, but Krillin stops him and asks him to show greater resolve instead 157.
