History
Origins and the Twelve Spirits
Accounts describe the Human Race as survivors sheltered by the Goddess after she slew the colossal Soul Type known as the Human Emperor. The Human Realm was formed within or from this being's remains, while the Goddess assigned the Twelve Spirits to guard the surviving humans against invading Demons and Soul Types. 172 173 234
The Twelve Spirits functioned as stabilizing pillars of the realm. Their Twelve Veins acted as “nails” that restrained the Human Emperor Soul Type's will from reviving; so long as the Human Realm and its veins endured, the spirits could eventually return through Spiritual Light. 182
Destruction of the Core Lands
Three thousand years before the Dragon Emperor era, an Earth Dragon Turns Over devastated the Human Race heartland. More than half of the population perished, over a dozen nations were destroyed, and the former unified empire fractured into the Ten Nations and Twelve Veins. The ruined core became an inaccessible forbidden land saturated with Earth energy and Evil. 101 123
A former Human Emperor later admitted that he had attempted to forcibly become a Human Dao Dragon through the faith of billions. The attempt coincided with the descent of the Faceless Evil God, the death of Chen Dragon, and the destruction of the core territory. 199
The fragmented nations repeatedly failed to reunify. Several kings briefly controlled multiple nations or nearly completed unification, only to die or see their achievements collapse; this was widely attributed to a curse connected to the ruined core lands. 149
Expulsion of Spirit Lords
Following catastrophic events three hundred years before Su Qingqiu's rise, the Human Race's higher echelons expelled ten-thousand-year Spirit Lords from the Human Realm. The campaign continued for nearly a century and ended roughly fifty years before the Dragon Emperor's conflict with the Ten Nations. Evidence related to the original disasters was also erased during the operation. 143
Some expelled Spirit Lords later became corrupted in Beyond Heaven and sought to return to the Human Realm. 98 116
Dragon Emperor Era
The Ten Nations and Twelve Veins initially rejected Su Qingqiu's claim to rule as Human Emperor because he was a member of the Spiritual Race. All ten royal houses and numerous first-rank cultivators opposed his enthronement. 156
After the Dragon Emperor defeated or absorbed the opposition, the remaining nations submitted. The royal bloodlines of the Ten Nations were executed as sacrifices during the declaration of unification, and Su Qingqiu was formally crowned Human Emperor. 179 180
The reclamation of the Human Race core lands later completed the reunification of the Human Realm, an event known as the Human Realm Epoch. 203
Government and Society
Ten Nations and Twelve Veins
Before unification, the Human Race was organized around ten nations and twelve spiritual lineages. The nations occupied fertile territory but relied on legendary first-rank cultivators to deter neighboring kingdoms, island nations, and demons. 106
The Human Race's higher echelons were divided into several political camps:
- Turtle faction — advocated complete separation from Beyond Heaven. 143
- Radical faction — sought to weaken or destroy the Heavenly Heart Human Dao and open the Human Realm to Beyond Heaven. 137 143
- Detached faction — remained outside the main blocs; Ji identified himself with this position. 143
- Conservative faction — later opposed reckless contact with Beyond Heaven and regarded the Dragon Emperor's actions as broadly beneficial to the Human Realm. 176
Infiltration by Beyond Heaven entities severely compromised the leadership. Four of the five lords who confronted the Dragon Emperor in Rou Zhao were Faceless Ones in disguise, while roughly one-third of the Human Emperor Hall's assembled lords were exposed as Faceless Kingdom entities or showed signs of corruption. 175 176
Dragon Dao Administration
Following unification, Zhaoyang Kyoto became the Dragon Emperor's Capital. The Dragon Dao spread across the former Ten Nations and Twelve Veins, while the old Human Dao receded. 181
The new order was divided among three major authorities:
| Authority | Function |
|---|---|
| Godly Dao Dragon Court | Governs divine affairs and receives offerings from mortals. 181 |
| Netherworld | Administers ghosts, death, yin and yang, and the Six Paths of Reincarnation. 194 198 |
| Human Dao Imperial Capital | Governs mortal affairs within the Human Realm. 181 |
The Dragon Emperor later established twelve Human Emperor crowns—Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai. Each crown may select a successor every five hundred years according to contribution, character, and imperial aura. 264
Cultivation and the Heavenly Heart Human Dao
Cultivation System
The Great Xuan Human Race's cultivation system consists of three stages and nine ranks. Rank nine is the foundation, while rank one is the highest. 17
| Level | Structure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower three ranks | Ranks 9–7 | Common among cultivators; rank nine begins by absorbing spiritual energy and transforming it into the Dao. 17 |
| Middle three ranks | Ranks 6–4 | Extremely rare, even within Dragon-Raising Temple. 17 |
| Upper three ranks | Ranks 3–1 | Regarded as legendary by many; first-rank cultivators protect the Human Race from external powers. 106 |
| Three stages | Qi Refining, Spirit Refining, God Refining | Also expressed as refining essence into qi, qi into spirit, and spirit into Dao. 17 101 |
Humans can use Pure Spiritual Qi and combine it with Spiritual Light to produce their own Daoist cultivation arts. This capacity distinguished them from most Spiritual Race beings. 109 154
Heavenly Heart Human Dao
The old Human Dao was sustained by humanistic chains spread among the nations. Two chains fell into the central region during the ancient calamity, while the remaining ten formed a Heavenly Heart and Heavenly Net that restrained the ruined core and obstructed Beyond Heaven's gaze. 137
The Human Dao was closely tied to the royal families and Twelve Veins. Removing those institutions and severing their connection to heaven and earth weakened the old system, allowing the Dragon Dao to replace it. 179 181
Before the Netherworld's creation, the Human Race's reincarnation cycle was fundamentally flawed: human souls broke apart after death, became foundations for Evil Qi, and could eventually produce Demons. 131
Major Threats
| Threat | Danger to the Human Race |
|---|---|
| Human Emperor Soul Type | The colossal Soul Type whose remains form the Human Realm. Its full revival could destroy the realm and end the Twelve Spirits' restraint. 173 182 |
| Faceless Evil God | Its Faceless Ones consume emotions, develop human faces, and infiltrate Human Race society without rejection by the Human Dao. 173 174 |
| Pale Pupil | Its radiated influence contributes to Evil Qi and the emergence of Demons within the Human Realm. 173 |
| Nether Emperor | Another Soul Type whose influence affects death, evil souls, and Demons in the Human Realm. 173 194 |
| Nine-Tailed Fox Nation | A Soul Type existing as a demonic nation that has sought for millennia to erode the Human Realm and turn it into Qingqiu's tenth nation. 173 179 |
| Beyond Heaven breaches | The Human Race core contains eleven major loopholes in its world membrane; Snake Abyss forms a twelfth breach. 173 |
Reincarnation
The Dragon Emperor established a unified Netherworld within the Human Realm's Earth Veins, creating the Six Paths of Reincarnation and strengthening the laws of yin and yang. This made it more difficult for Beyond Heaven Demons to enter the Human Realm. 194
The Six Paths include a Demonic Dao for those consumed by the five poisons, influenced by Beyond Heaven Demons, or judged neither wholly good nor evil. This provision won the Dragon Emperor support among some Demon races. 195
