Uncle Fu was a starving beggar sixty years earlier when Ye Yun's grandfather found him in the snow, brought him into the military camp, fed him, and taught him literacy and martial arts. Though he practiced for ten years, he never sensed vital energy; his grandfather nevertheless kept him at his side. Fu later followed the army, made minor contributions, and eventually entered Ye Family service. 2 27
During the Ye Family massacre ten years before the story, Fu hid six-year-old Ye Yun among clutter near the manor wall and covered the child's mouth while fighting occurred inside. Afterward, he took Ye Yun into seclusion at the family's dilapidated old residence in Chun'an County, maintaining its two houses and courtyard while raising him. 1 2
Three years before Chapter 25, Ye Yun's father returned to the residence badly wounded and entrusted Fu with the upper half of the True Martial Secret Manual. Fu swore not to reveal it until Ye Yun became a martial artist, then spent the following years concealing and protecting it. 25
