Wang Ying was formerly the leading courtesan of Misty Rain Pavilion. A Muzhou wanted notice alleges that, three months after a wealthy Tongzhou merchant redeemed her, she murdered all thirty-seven members of his household and later incited constables, martial artists, and escorts to become bandits. 12

She gives Li Mo a different account of the merchant’s death: after redeeming her, he subjected her to the degrading treatment known as being used as “beauty paper.” She presents the massacre as her response to that abuse. 14

Pingshan Society

Li Mo first encounters Wang Ying while seeking revenge for Zhao Siman’s death; he hires her assistance, and she directs him to meet her at Black Mountain Cliff. 12 When he arrives, she recruits him into the Pingshan Society, introduces him to its Gao brother leaders, and vouches for his value as a physician. The stronghold’s guards address her as “Group Leader Wang.” 14
