Background & History
Misty Rain Pavilion and criminal notoriety
Wang Ying was formerly the leading courtesan of Misty Rain Pavilion. A Muzhou wanted notice alleges that, three months after a wealthy Tongzhou merchant redeemed her, she murdered all thirty-seven members of his household and later incited constables, martial artists, and escorts to become bandits. 12
She gives Li Mo a different account of the merchant’s death: after redeeming her, he subjected her to the degrading treatment known as being used as “beauty paper.” She presents the massacre as her response to that abuse. 14
Pingshan Society
Li Mo first encounters Wang Ying while seeking revenge for Zhao Siman’s death; he hires her assistance, and she directs him to meet her at Black Mountain Cliff. 12 When he arrives, she recruits him into the Pingshan Society, introduces him to its Gao brother leaders, and vouches for his value as a physician. The stronghold’s guards address her as “Group Leader Wang.” 14
Wang Ying guides Li Mo through the stronghold, introduces him to its structure and caravan-tribute income, and helps establish him among its members. 15 She later exchanges information about cultivators for his promise to reserve medicinal supplies for her own followers during the Pingshan Society’s war with the Lishan Gang. 17 18
After Nine Rivers Thunder Dragon Tai Shou’s death, Wang Ying becomes the focal point of a power struggle against the Gao brothers. She seeks the Turtle Breath Technique as a means of securing her survival before an expected government crackdown on the Eighteen Mountains. In return for Li Mo’s support, she offers him the Spirit Reflection Sword Manual and information about spiritual-root testing. 20
Escape from Wen Daoren
Years later, Wang Ying is travelling with the Thunder Escort Agency when Li Mo encounters her again. 45 She asks him to protect her from Wen Daoren, a weak rogue cultivator skilled in runes and restrictions who had assisted Tai Shou in repairing an ancient tomb’s altar. 46
In exchange for protection, she gives Li Mo five hundred taels in banknotes and reveals that Tai Shou had returned to the Eighteen Mountains to restore silver runes on the mysterious altar rather than to forge magical artifacts. 46 Wen Daoren flees after learning that a Lingmu Sect cultivator is accompanying her. 46

Personality

She frequently uses flirtation and a soft, seductive manner in negotiations, but her dealings with Li Mo are grounded in clear exchanges of value: medical treatment for her followers, support in the Pingshan Society conflict, the Spirit Reflection Sword Manual, tomb intelligence, and money. 17 20 46
Despite her criminal reputation, Wang Ying shows sympathy when Li Mo explains Zhao Siman’s fate, agreeing that the Zhao family deserved punishment. 14
