Background / History

Master Tongtian was the leader of the Jie Sect and one of the Saints. After the Investiture of the Gods calamity devastated his sect and scattered or destroyed the Myriad Immortals, Dao Ancestor Hongjun placed him under house arrest in Purple Cloud Palace. His Saintly power was sealed, leaving him despairing and unable to defend his daughter, Xiruan, against Hongjun’s attack. 1

Xiruan’s actions gradually overturned his confinement. She brought him Nine Revolutions Golden Elixirs that revived his Saint origin, reunited him with returning Jie Sect disciples, and ultimately smashed the Heavenly Dao restriction sealing Purple Cloud Palace. Tongtian and his disciples were then able to leave and return toward rebuilding their home. 11 48 60

When Hongjun summoned the Six Sages, Tongtian no longer submitted quietly. He pressed Haotian to accept employment protections for Jie Sect disciples, forced the Western Saints to release converted disciples and provide compensation, and petitioned Hongjun to lift Golden Turtle Island’s restrictions and release the trapped True Spirits of Jie Sect disciples. 116 124 125

Later, Tongtian rejected the Heavenly Dao’s control altogether and secluded himself on Golden Turtle Island to cultivate a path based on Chaos Great Dao origin and strength. When Xiruan’s plans in the Western Liang Women’s Kingdom brought her into conflict with Ying Zheng’s interests, he broke through the island’s protective formation and descended to the lower realm. 352

His daughter’s influence also placed him at the head of the Chaos Alliance. Though initially embarrassed by Xiruan’s use of spirit milk to secure votes, Tongtian accepted the alliance leadership after challengers were defeated and the Chaos Fiendgods submitted. 503 504

Tongtian later accompanied Xiruan through Chaos, discovered an ancestral estate connected to a Pangu phantom, and relocated the Jie Sect from Golden Turtle Island to the new home. He subsequently entered the Dragon Kingdom’s mortal world, confirmed that the Primeval World’s myths were real, and helped guide the immortals during the worldwide resurgence of spiritual energy. 510 519 520 526 535

Tongtian is portrayed as an imposing Saint whose bearing can shift from worn-down and restrained to openly domineering when his power is restored. He is commonly seen in green or azure Daoist robes and carries himself with sword-like intensity. 334 352 354

Personality

Tongtian is fiercely protective of Xiruan. Even while sealed, he attempts to force his way through his restraints when Yuanshi attacks her, threatening to enter the Devilish Dao and perish alongside his brother if she is harmed. When Tathagata’s conflict with Xiruan escalates, he immediately prepares to personally back up the Jie Sect’s Little Ancestor. 16 471

He is deeply attached to his disciples and regards their return after the Investiture of the Gods calamity as more important than punishment or blame. Their recovery, freedom, and status remain central to his political demands toward Hongjun, Haotian, and the Western Saints. 48 124 125

Despite his saintly dignity, Tongtian is frequently left stunned, embarrassed, or anxious by Xiruan’s destructive generosity.
