"That should work," Liu Miao replied.
Guo Yujie had already calmed down by then, and she stopped Liu Miao from stepping forward.
"I'll do it." Guo Yujie squeezed past me, went to the wall, and punched straight through it.
Nothing strange happened. It was just that the two steps she'd taken still creaked. The wall itself made no such noise when it was broken.
The wall was hollow, and the photograph was wedged inside the gap.
Guo Yujie pulled the photograph out.
I hadn't been mistaken earlier. It really was a photograph of a baby whose eyes had been gouged out. Before, I'd only been able to make out the general shape through the hole. Now I could see the whole picture.
The photograph was an unusual size, enlarged to the size of a real baby. The baby wore a one-piece outfit. It had faded and yellowed so much that its original color was impossible to make out. There was no pattern on it, either. But beside the baby's little leg, I could see a pair of hands holding him.
It was probably a photo taken when the baby turned one month old or a hundred days old. Adults held the child for those kinds of pictures. Sometimes they draped a piece of cloth over themselves to serve as a backdrop.
I had a hundred-day photo like that, taken at a photo studio. My younger sister did, too.
But... this photo seemed different somehow...
The background was ordinary clothing, and I could still see a checkered pattern.
"It looks like the photo was cut out separately. It might originally have been a family portrait," Wu Ling said.
