"What are you talking about?" I had a bad feeling.
The skinny guy's voice was dejected, helpless. "That Zheng Xiaorui died seven years ago."
"Ah..." I let out a meaningless syllable, suddenly recalling "Boss's" opinion of Zheng Xiaorui.
Seven years ago, that would be in 2015. That young girl only lived for another year... Was it because of that "serious illness" that her vitality was damaged, and she got worse?
"She died of illness, multiple organ failure, immune system collapse, something like that... they couldn't even find the cause." The skinny guy suddenly lowered his voice. "Was she harmed by a ghost?"
"No, Qingye resolved her situation. It's just... she was quite scared, so maybe she didn't recover well." I hesitated, not mentioning "Boss's" comment. Deep down, I still suspected that this kind of supernatural stuff might be real, perhaps because I subconsciously felt that saying it out loud would have negative consequences.
"I see. Anyway, she's dead. Her parents never heard of any Qingye Agency. After I mentioned it, they even wanted to find someone to settle the score..." The skinny guy complained. "We still want to find that agency!"
"She went with a classmate back then, Duan Shishi, a high school classmate. She was the one who found Qingye. Why don't you try finding that Duan Shishi?" I provided the skinny guy with some information.
The skinny guy's spirits lifted. "Okay! Sigh, I'll have to trouble Xiao Gu again."
Xiao Gu is a police officer at the station. The police system is networked, and we rely on him to find people. Lately, he's been asked to find dead people, and his work isn't progressing, so it's really a bit embarrassing.
After a couple more sentences with the skinny guy, I hung up. I walked back to the sofa and saw Grandpa Wang staring intently at me.
"Sorry, Grandpa Wang, I had some work matters to attend to and the call took a while. Where were you guys talking about?" I smiled apologetically.
Director Mao replied, "We were talking about the post-demolition arrangements. We'll ask the construction team to keep an eye out for Auntie Wang's return. Xiao Guo also promised to come by often to help Uncle Wang keep watch. Uncle Wang, the demolition office is truly sincere. They genuinely want to help you, and you should also help them with their work. It's good for everyone to help each other, don't you think?"
Grandpa Wang was still staring at me and asked abruptly, "You mentioned Qingye just now, is it that Qingye Supernatural Agency in Building Six?"
The three of us were stunned.
I nodded. "Yes, it's that Qingye. Grandpa Wang, do you know that agency? Do you know anyone there?"
Grandpa Wang slapped his thigh and sighed softly. "I know them. My old wife was missing, and I wanted to ask them to look for her. Those young people were very capable; there was nothing they couldn't find. But... they were already closed back then."
Guo Yujie and I exchanged glances.
"May I ask for the names of those people? And also, were they the owners of those four rooms on the sixth floor of Building Six?"
"Do you know where they are now?"
Guo Yujie and I asked eagerly.
Grandpa Wang nodded and shook his head. "I know their boss's name is Ye Qing, and another young man is Liu Miao. I don't know the others. The owners weren't them; they were employees of our old factory. I don't remember who, but it has nothing to do with those young people. However, the owner entrusted the house to Ye Qing. As for where they are now..." Grandpa Wang paused, then shook his head again. "I don't know where they went. They often went out for work, even to other cities and abroad, so they would disappear for a while. Besides, their work was a bit strange, and people in the neighborhood were reluctant to interact with them."
Grandpa Wang sighed. "If they were still here, maybe my old wife could have been found."
Guo Yujie looked a little disappointed.
But I heard a different tone in Grandpa Wang's sigh. I looked at Grandpa Wang, and tears seemed to well up in his cloudy eyes. A thought suddenly struck me: perhaps Grandpa Wang wasn't unaware of the slim hope of finding Auntie Wang, and perhaps he didn't firmly believe Auntie Wang was still alive. He was just waiting for Auntie Wang's soul to return, waiting for Auntie Wang to send him a dream, to say goodbye. The police couldn't find Auntie Wang; perhaps only people like Qingye could find her, but the Qingye people were gone.
For some reason, the image of the agency in the darkness appeared in my mind.
That room, quietly residing on the sixth floor of Building Six, was it also waiting for its owner's soul to return?
I shivered.
"Ye Qing, Liu Miao, is that how it's written?" Guo Yujie was asking Grandpa Wang about the important matter.
Grandpa Wang looked. "Yes, one is Qingye reversed, and the other is three-water Miao."
"Did the owner transfer the property to them?"
"I don't know about that."
"Thank you very much. We will also follow up on your situation and do our best to find Auntie Wang!" Guo Yujie looked directly at Grandpa Wang, serious and sincere. "But one thing at a time, the demolition is beneficial to the entire neighborhood. And with your situation, you can't just wait around. If Auntie Wang saw you like this, she would surely blame you, right?"
Grandpa Wang smiled.
I tugged at Guo Yujie, signaling her that today was enough.
Director Mao expressed more concern for Grandpa Wang's well-being and then left with us.
After leaving the building, Director Mao said to Guo Yujie, "Xiao Guo, Uncle Wang is very stubborn. I'll give you his daughter's phone number, and you can talk to her. I was thinking, if you find a way, could you find a psychologist to talk to him? Without revealing your identity, pretend to be from the demolition office."
I asked curiously, "Is this his daughter's idea?"
"Yes, she wanted to take her dad to see a psychologist two years ago. You should have seen Uncle Wang back then. He lived a normal life every day, and when he got home at night, he'd wait for Auntie Wang to cook for him. If his daughter hadn't come, I was really afraid he'd starve to death at home. Later, his daughter cried and begged him, and only then did he admit that Auntie Wang was missing, but he always said Auntie Wang would come back. Wouldn't that scare his daughter? She consulted a doctor, and the doctor said he needed a thorough examination, but Uncle Wang refused, saying Xiao Wang wanted to hypnotize him into forgetting Auntie Wang... The father and daughter quarreled for a long time. Xiao Wang was also smart; she brought out her son, let him hug Uncle Wang's leg and cry, and only then did Uncle Wang agree to visit and take care of his grandson during winter and summer vacations. If he stayed in that house all the time, who knows what problems would develop," Director Mao said sympathetically.
She hadn't told us this before. Guo Yujie's heart softened as she listened.
"Then I'll think of a way."
We said goodbye to Director Mao and returned to the office.
On the way, I told Guo Yujie that Grandpa Wang might have already accepted reality but was unwilling to admit it, deceiving himself. Now, if they really found someone or a body, the shock, whether happy or sad, might be too much for Grandpa Wang to bear.
"Then what should we do?" Guo Yujie was distressed.
"Don't worry about it. Whether we can find them is another matter." I called the skinny guy and informed him of the good news.
