Background

Shanshan and her boyfriend, Mr. Pan, checked into the Junli Hotel on New Year's Day in 2001 to watch the fireworks. Pan intended to propose to her that night, and she accepted after he offered her an engagement ring. 14

While admiring the ring, Shanshan wore a square diamond ring rather than the round-diamond ring Pan believed he had bought. Pan later dreamed of her hand waving the unfamiliar ring before his eyes, accompanied by a loud sound. 14

At some point after midnight, Shanshan left the hotel alone. Hotel staff later recalled that she appeared disheveled and injured, but refused assistance or explanation. 15

Shanshan subsequently died by suicide after jumping into a river. When Pan viewed her body, he and his sister saw the same square ring on her exposed hand. Her death was recorded as the second victim of the New Year's Day Ghost Fetus incident. 15

Following her death, Shanshan's parents handled the funeral, barred Pan from attending, and later moved to the countryside to avoid discussing the incident. The whereabouts of her belongings, including the ring, were left unknown. 15
