They searched the entire estate but couldn't find a scrap of food, so they had no choice but to sleep on empty stomachs. In the darkness, their hollow bellies took turns growling embarrassingly.

They passed through several villages along the way. As expected, they couldn't find any food, only corpses appearing from time to time. At least they didn't encounter anything quite so tragic again.

To conserve their strength, they could only find straw mats and other odds and ends to hastily cover the bodies before continuing on their way.

An entire day passed. They encountered neither an enemy supply unit nor a single living person.

Even Donald, who had grown accustomed to a life of poverty on Lant Island, had never experienced hunger like this.

His stomach clearly had nothing left to digest, yet it still churned unwillingly, its walls rubbing together until they ached faintly. Gradually, the pain became more noticeable and more intense. In the end, it wasn't just his stomach—even his entire abdominal cavity felt as though a ball of fire were burning inside it.
