Background / History
Wesley is the son of Dean Devis of Tris Magic Academy and the nephew of Professor Victor. His mother died when he was five; Wesley resents Devis for not seeking Divine Grace to save her, and this loss contributed to his cynical, deliberately idle persona at the academy. 31
As a fourth-year Magic Array student, Wesley meets Donald at the academy library. Calling himself a poet rather than a magician, he becomes Donald's first close friend in the Hells Continent and helps him learn to read magic texts and study the academy curriculum. 8
Although he initially avoids Carl's proposed duel, Wesley later challenges him after learning that Carl bullied Donald. He defeats Carl by using a tiny Wind Blade to detonate Carl's unfinished Fireball, then warns him not to target Donald again. 15 16
After the war against the Thorn Empire, Wesley receives an earldom and studies at the Imperial Magic Academy in Coennas. He later travels to the Magic Continent despite Donald's warning, is enslaved as a Magical Pet at Wind Holy Academy for a year, and eventually escapes with Donald. 228 334 406
Appearance
Wesley is seventeen during the Martial Magic Tournament. He has a notably plump, unusual physique, yet becomes more agile after training in Azure Battle Qi. 47 457 541
- Often affects a relaxed, theatrical pose, including whistling during a duel. 16
- Has a prominent Adam's apple. 62
- Later appears in an old-fashioned noble robe. 670
- His large build makes Donald initially doubt his suitability for knight training. 442
Personality
Wesley is flamboyant, vain, and irreverent. He calls himself a poet even before writing poems, pursues Lucia with little success, and habitually turns tense situations into jokes or performances. 8 16 307 His humor can be provocative—he briefly jokes that he is in love with Donald—but he is also unusually candid when discussing serious matters. 307
Behind his unserious manner, Wesley is loyal and protective. He confronts Carl over Donald's mistreatment, aids Donald's research and cultivation, and repeatedly places himself in danger for allies. 11 16 288 He becomes increasingly thoughtful about social class, governance, war, and reform, eventually serving as a public advocate for Donald's political vision. 246 505 572
