Background / History
Downs began as a knight apprentice from the Quijote family. His decision to abandon knighthood and sell his family’s heirloom armor to pursue magic made him the subject of ridicule in his hometown. 10 He encountered Lein Tesla and immediately treated him as his master, despite Lein initially insisting that he was only teaching knowledge. 2
Lein’s lessons in electricity, elemental theory, and physics gave Downs a route into magic during the Age of Demise of Magic. Downs proved unusually capable of turning incomplete understanding into functional spells: after injuring himself with Electric Claw, he independently created the 2nd-level protection spell Lightning and Arrow Shield by attempting to separate “Thunder Element” from wind. 6
His emergence as a Formal Mage made him one of the first publicly recognized mages in a century. He humiliated a heckler with Lightning Whip, then defended Ramanque City from a goblin invasion with an Electromagnetic Gun, a Magic Shield, and elemental attacks. 10 12 The victory transformed him from a mocked “wastrel” into a local hero and drew the attention of the Cervantes Kingdom. 12 14
Downs later became the public face of Lein’s school. He explored mage towers and the Chaos Ark, gained practical combat experience, recruited followers, and eventually led forces of his own. He continued studying under Lein even after reaching Legendary rank, rejecting offers to establish an independent Mage Tower because he believed he had learned less than one percent of his master’s knowledge. 310
Appearance
Downs is a tall, thin young man who was sixteen or seventeen when he first became publicly known as a mage. He continued growing and was expected to exceed 1.90 meters in height. 12 67
- Wears a striking purple-blue mage robe marked with lightning symbols. 35
- Often travels with Laifu, the legendary Fire Bat familiar, perched on his shoulder. 36
- His Rainbow Horse became a recognizable personal symbol. 99
- Retained his outward appearance after ascending to godhood, though his body was transformed into a materialized spiritual-energy form. 596
Personality
Downs is intensely earnest about magic and sees Lein as both a master and a father figure. He is driven by the desire to become worthy of succeeding Lein, aspiring to summon heavenly thunder as casually as his master does. 6 20 His loyalty is sincere, though he frequently misreads Lein’s actions as deeper plans or tests designed specifically for him. 20 23
His thought process is creative but highly unconventional. He often fails to grasp orthodox theory—especially formulas—yet leaps from fragments of scientific knowledge to bizarre but effective magical results. Lein characterizes his thinking as unsuitable for orthodox magical research. 67 165 This tendency makes Downs both a prodigy and a source of constant alarm for his master. 7 166
In public, Downs can be shy and socially overwhelmed, particularly around nobles and prospective followers. 52 In battle, however, he is confident, enthusiastic, and sometimes arrogant enough to invoke his master’s reputation openly. 36 38 The Chaos Ark expedition tempered his impulsiveness: repeated near-death encounters made him more cautious and gave him a calmness beyond his age. 81 83
Abilities & Skills
Physics-Derived Magic
Downs interprets scientific principles as magical laws, creating spells through intuition rather than conventional magical scholarship.
- Created Lightning and Arrow Shield through an unorthodox attempt to separate wind and thunder. 6
- Developed the 4th-level Transformation spell Fictional Gravity after learning about atmospheric pressure. 32
- Created Newton’s Law of Gravity, a transformation spell represented by an illusion of “Master Newton.” 166
- Uses scientist-themed manifestations for spells based on Joule’s Law, the Doppler Effect, and other concepts. 166
- Struggles severely with high-school physics formulas despite understanding broader principles. 165
Electromagnetism and Evocation
Electricity is Downs’ primary combat specialty. His spells provide close-range control, ranged firepower, area attacks, and overwhelming burst damage.
- Electric Claw — One of his earliest lightning spells; left deep scorched marks on the ground but initially injured Downs himself. 6
- Lightning Whip — Used to incapacitate a tavern heckler and kill a goblin during the defense of Ramanque City. 10 12
- Chain Lightning — Defeated more than a hundred vengeful spirits in a single attack. 38
- Electromagnetic Gun / Cannon — His signature ranged weapon-like spell; used against Goblin Bears, Treasure Chest Monsters, Dragon Eels, Faola, and the Multi-armed Giant. 12 55 80 305
- Lightning Storm — Destroyed a force of Dreadguards in the Madra Mage Tower. 38
- Law of Conservation of Energy — Recovered scattered lightning and reformed it into an electric spear for another strike. 306
Downs’ devil magic has no fixed daily usage limit, unlike old-era Magic Network casting; his practical limit is how much his body can endure. 80
Defensive and Elemental Control
Downs combines lightning with wind, frost, and protective spells to compensate for threats at different ranges.
- Uses wind elementals to form a large shield that excludes non-wind elements from approaching him. 33
- Can cast defensive magic such as Magic Shield, Protect Arrows, Stone Skin Technique, and Fire Shield. 12 80 82
- Uses low-temperature embrittlement before firing electromagnetic attacks against heavily defended enemies. 305
- Deflected Master-level warlock Faola’s Flame Blast with a newly created vacuum-wall devil magic. 54
- Lacks spatial magic and is less suited to opponents able to escape through planar or soul-based movement. 301
Metamagic and Spell Innovation
Downs’ unconventional comprehension lets him alter spells and discover new applications from incomplete lessons.
- Awakened the metamagic feat Widen Spell through an epiphany concerning the soul. 32
- Possesses multiple Super Magic Specializations, allowing his 3rd- and 4th-level spells to begin at power levels approaching 5th or 6th-level magic. 33
- Developed a “divine descent” casting style by visualizing scientists and their theorems as active magical entities. 166
- Must regulate gravity manipulation carefully; exceeding a 50% increase or decrease risks exhausting all of his devilish power and killing him. 419
Traits
- Not Greedy for Wealth — Gained after surviving a Treasure Chest Monster encounter. 81
- Abstinence from Lust — Gained after nearly dying to the Split-Head Woman; grants a +10 bonus on relevant checks when facing temptation through beauty. 82
- His aversion to greed and lust arose through traumatic practical experience rather than formal instruction. 81 82
Divine Authority
After accepting godhood, Downs became recognized by the World Will through electromagnetic laws.
- His apprentices chanted electromagnetic laws during the conferment ritual. 596
- His Intelligence and Perception rose beyond 100 upon ascension. 596
- Initially struggled with the overwhelming noise of prayers and voices reaching his divine senses. 596
- Was expected to establish faith centered on the Cervantes Kingdom. 589
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Thunder Robe — High-tier robe that can generate a retaliatory lightning shield up to three times daily; the shield damages attackers using natural or non-long weapons. 33
- Reason Badge — A pure-silver badge used as the “cannonball” for his most destructive Electromagnetic Cannon attacks. 305
- Arcane fishing-net artifact — A seemingly worthless royal-treasury item that Downs selected because of its unusually high power output. 46
- Laifu — Legendary Fire Bat familiar lent to Downs by Lein before his Mage Tower expedition. 34
- Wind Rider / Rainbow Horse — His mount and a widely recognized symbol of his arrival. 34 99
Relationships
- Lein Tesla — Master, mentor, and paternal figure. Downs’ ambition, magical style, and continued refusal to leave the Physics School are rooted in his devotion to Lein. 2 20 310
- Sanders — Shadow Dancer companion and later junior brother; saved Downs from a Treasure Chest Monster and accompanied him through the Chaos Ark. 79 82
- Harry — Junior brother. Downs teaches him physics-derived magic and is treated as his senior brother. 166
- Balende — Junior brother who joins Downs’ circle of disciples and followers. 123 166
- Gantya — Legendary Barbarian follower and Downs’ principal enforcer; fought beside him against the Multi-armed Giant and guarded him during his Legendary promotion. 301 305 308
- Ganis — Cervantes Kingdom advisor who recognized Downs’ potential, offered him high-tier equipment, and recruited him for the Mage Tower mission. 14 33 34
- Earl of Ramanque — Formerly angered by Downs abandoning knighthood, but later publicly hailed him as a future Archmage. 12 52
Story Role / Major Arcs
Apprenticeship and Return of Magic
Downs becomes Lein’s first disciple, rapidly develops self-created lightning magic, and reappears in Ramanque as a Formal Mage. His defense of the city against goblins establishes him as a symbol of magic’s return after a century of decline. 2 6 10 12
Noan Mage Tower Expedition
After reaching High-Level Mage status, Downs accepts Cervantes’ request to clear a mage tower. He recruits Juan Sandru, Pat Colao, Christine Levander, and John Shadowdagger, then proves far stronger than his rank suggests against vengeful spirits, animated objects, and Dreadguards. 34 39
Duel with Faola
Downs challenges the Master-level warlock Faola to a death duel. Using the Physical Network and an upgraded Electromagnetic Cannon, he defeats Faola despite the difference in rank. 53 55
Chaos Ark Training
Downs enters the Chaos Ark with Sanders to gain real combat experience. He defeats powerful monsters, survives being swallowed by a Treasure Chest Monster, learns caution from multiple traps, and reaches Master Level during the expedition. 79 83
Rise of the Physics School
