Background / History

Zeus escaped Cronus’s attempt to swallow his children, later forced Cronus to release his siblings, and led his brothers in overthrowing the Titan Gods. During the Titanomachy, he released the Hecatoncheires and Cyclopes from Tartarus and used a thunder scepter made for him to defeat the Titans. The defeated Titans were imprisoned in Tartarus, while Atlas was sentenced to bear the sky. 680

After the war, Zeus and his brothers nearly fought over the division of the world. A lottery gave Zeus dominion over the sky, establishing him as the Sky God; he subsequently made Hera his queen and shared authority over Mount Olympus and the sky with her. 683

By the time Chaos invaded Olympus, Zeus had neglected Tartarus while indulging in parties and womanizing, allowing Chaos to corrupt the prison and its Titan inmates. He and the Twelve Main Gods could injure the corrupted Titans, but his lightning increasingly failed to stop them permanently. 680

Zeus initially approached Lein through an avatar disguised as a talking crab, seeking cooperation against the Chaos Lord. Lein recognized the infiltration, destroyed the avatar’s traces, and treated Zeus as an untrustworthy potential ally. 678

He is also deeply conspiratorial. Having risen through deception and opportunism, he instinctively seeks shortcuts against formidable enemies: exiling threats he cannot conveniently kill, withholding information from allies, and attempting to use the Chaos Lord against Lein. 686 736 745

His lecherous and possessive behavior alienates both his family and his pantheon. Even so, after losing nearly all support, Zeus ultimately chose to confront Uranus and Gaea directly, sacrificing himself to immobilize them for Lein’s finishing attack. 691 754 760
