Background / History

Evil spirits have several documented origins. Mr. Wang is a transformed deceased person, while the relatives haunting Wu Xian arise from a slaughtered family’s desire for revenge. Luo Wang’s history describes a different path: a righteous village god becomes an evil ghost after the Yan family’s betrayal 8 52 246.

Their appearance is not limited to the Blessed Lands. Feng Chen states that real-world incidents are less frequent and that people who repeatedly commit bad deeds are more likely to transform. In the motorcycle case, however, the immediate cause is an infected engine covered in black blood vessels; Feng Chen explains that real-world births are mostly connected to such objects 92 93.

Evil Persons deliberately cultivate spirits and attempt to turn the real world into a Blessed Land. One experiments with creating an abnormal area capable of continuously producing them. In the underground maze, Wu Xian concludes that the Black Heavenly Lord’s agent uses ordinary people as intermediaries to draw spirits underground and carry others back to the surface 367 377 410 434.

Appearance

Personality & Behavior

Malice, appetite, and obsession frequently replace human attachments. The Child-Seeking Ghost Mother abandons her husband, parents, job, conscience, and empathy after transforming. Du Huiyi’s growing compulsion to spy on others drives her to attempt escape during the building clearance 40 375.

Some spirits retain intelligence, caution, and social behavior. The Door-Breaking Wraith avoids the stronger Ghost Mother and experiences fear when confronted. Spirits at the Liu family banquet compete for prizes, while Ma Peng conceals his aura and resists the lure that attracts six others 39 153 480.

Friendliness does not necessarily remove their dangerous nature. The account of Aunt Miao states that even exceptionally high Yin virtue may produce only a temporary favorable attitude toward humans. Xiong Gang nevertheless cooperates with Wu Xian’s group, and the Red Lips Female Evil Spirit protects Gong Xiujuan 299 425 439.

• Newborn aggression: Xiong Gang describes an initial irritable phase in which a new spirit thinks only of killing and attacks whatever is in front of it until it has killed one or two targets 435.
